Lousy Pic But What Are These White Spots??

Could be snail eggs. Can you make out more than one mass of yellow? Are there more dots inside?

Starting Remote Deep Sand Bed, DIY in bucket

I primed and glued the parts on the bucket (the nub for the input, and one side of the union): I'm not going to bother with the rest until I'm sure everything is plumbed correctly. I filled the bucket with 5/8 of a 50lb bag of Quickcrete, and then all of the 15lb bag of aragonite, and then...

    maxi jet mod

You're talking about an in-tank powerhead mod I think: this is for the powerhead on a protein skimmer.

Where do you BUY filter socks? None of my LFS have them. And ordering them online is.... irritating.

will this be a cool fuge or what?

I'm afraid all the water is going to fall out of those holes on the bottom. Tragic, really.

Starting Remote Deep Sand Bed, DIY in bucket

Diatoms can get silica right out of glass if they need it. They are just part of the algae cycle: it's nutrients that make them bloom, not silica sand. Course, if you're worried, you could always spend hundreds of dollars on all aragonite. :)

    maxi jet mod

Can you explain a little more about the material you used? Why dod you need to make any cuts in the impeller at all? Why not simply add the black crazy stuff that slices the water?

    Change in skimmer production?

Skimmers will pull all sorts of things out of the water at different rates, depending on what's in the tank. It's no unusal for them to cut back for a time here and there. Though the better skimmers tend to pull more out period, and so its rarer and rarer with them that production will drop...

Starting Remote Deep Sand Bed, DIY in bucket

Note that if you wanted, this design would work just as well for a super cheap fuge (and 6 gallons of fuge is pretty decent for a 55 gal tank). You'd just need to cut out the lid of the bucket to add a light.

Starting Remote Deep Sand Bed, DIY in bucket

Got some time to continue the project today. I was able to cram a 1/2 Inner Diameter vinyl tube over the spout of the powerhead, and then work it on far enough to cover the extra hole (you'll note I've also capped the main venturi output hole/peg). This is an aquaclear 50, and it took a bit...

Best way to hook a powerhead up to pump water?

Isn't using two pumps in and out generally derided as a bad idea? One is always going to go faster than the other. I'm just overflowing back into my sump basically. The tube will have to go up a few inches, but not too much, and relatively light flow is desired anyhow.

need help with a DIY durso overflow

Don't rely on a check valve. The small hole is better insurance. The only problem is that it will mean that you'll blow air when you first turn your main pump back on, which is annoying.

    RO/DI question

A common trick people often talk about is getting a really long tube in coils that will go from your water source to the RO/DI, dumping those coils in a bucket of water, then putting a cheap heater in there and setting it to around 74/76 degrees. It will heat up the water decently enough to...

Do I need a protein Skimmer?

Seaclones aren't worth the money you pay for them, especially given that some stores sell them for as much as it would cost to buy a really good skimmer (around $200). Save yourself money and headache in the long run and get a highly recommended skimmer brand instead of this *****-quality...

    Help, ph 8.6!

The bloom could be what's doing it I think: plants photosynthesizing raises the ph, right? If so, you cut way back on your light that could help drop the ph. How long do you have your MH's on for? Hopefully not all day long. I've never used MHs, but I've heard that you have to break the tank...

Best way to hook a powerhead up to pump water?

As I'm going to be describing in the other thread, I'm working on an rdsb. I have most everything mapped out, but I need advice on one little thing: what the best way to use one of my two spare powerheads to pump water out of my sump and into the bucket. (the pump will be in the sump and...

can you use home depot sand?

In my case, it's not going in a tank, but a bucket plumbed into the system: basically a somewhat different application, in the end, than having it in a tank, and so different concerns.
