If any of the posts here are contradictory to what that member has told any other member in the past, it is because they know the "right way" to do things and would never pass along wrong or risky info. That's one reason that this board is so great. When you have been involved in SW for a while...

    Killer Anemone?

It is absolutely possible that those fish were anemone snacks. Depending on the size of the anemone, it wouldn't take long for him to ingest a goby or a blenny. They can make short order of some good sized silverside chunks. My GBTA went back to the store after having had him 2 years, because of...

how long do you keep your actinics on for?

I'm the same as grzy. I also find it's a good way to ease into the light, and to cool it down before turning on the moons. Mine are on all day, with the daylights.

Do we really know what we are doing?

IMO and IME are what the saltwater experience is about, truly, aren't they? I don't own an ocean. I own 55 gallons of life that I really CARE deeply about. Down to the last hitchhiker that I didn't spend a dime on. The variables are endless, and it sometimes feels like if I ever type again "What...

    Brown Algae Overtaking my tank.

I stand corrected, I believe. So, in what case would a year old tank produce nitrus acid? An excess of oxygen? And so, pesci, How long has the LR been in the tank? Do you have fish? A cleaning crew? And as asked, what is the filter system other than the skimmer? Powerheads? How often do you do...

    Brown Algae Overtaking my tank.

No misunderstanding or typo. It is all bacteria. There is nitrobacteria and denitrifying bacteria, etc..I agree that it is a miracle. It was a simplified rundown to be sure.

    Funny BG Chromis

Yeah, 8 hours later. They are in the 20 and look good. Hiding. I'm sure it will take quite a bit of time for them to be comfortable enough for, well...I'll let you know what transpires.

    Brown Algae Overtaking my tank.

And you have nitrite? That is odd in a year old tank. Nitrite is a bacteria that usually developes while a tank is in its initial cycle. Bacteria then develope that control the nitrite and that is nitrate. How long has the LR been in the tank? Do you have fish? A cleaning crew? And as asked...

    Seahorses in a Community Tank

Part of the point is that I added 8 fish over a five year period. I think that is a big piece of why it works for me. The tank has stayed remarkably stable, except for a couple of glitches. I have not had any ich or disease (knock on glass). I have only lost one fish and that was a dissappearing...

    cleanup crew first?

I don't know what the cereal box rules are, but IMO, a freshly cycled tank does not have what it takes to support a crew. If you add fish, get crabs (hermits are great, 1 sallylight legs is good)to clean up after them. We tend to feed new fish more than we should to draw them out, so you need...

    damsel//FISH question

That will be 4 fish, who have the capacity to outgrow the tank in a relatively short period of time, all feeding at the same level. IMO, not happy moments a year or so down the road.
