awesome pictures! I have a question though...How do you control the algae and detritus without having a cleanup crew?

if youre only 5 days into the cycle, it sounds about normal. Probably just the diatoms. This should go away within a week and then you should get a bunch of algae and that should go away within a week and then you are pretty much in the clear! (at least thats exactly what my tank did)

my question is: Once they leave their tubes, how do you know if it is alive or not? Do they move around or just lay there? Mine did the same thing as everyone else...he threw his crown and the next day was hanging halfway out of his tube. I assumed he was dead because he wasnt moving so i tossed...

look at that color change!!! He looked red and orange in the orange bucket and now pink and purple on the coraline covered rock. How awesome!!! I seriously want one of these stars. Just wish I could FIND one!! :joy:

still, im sure if the tang ever wanted to relax, it would be pretty hard to do with an aggresive eel. Sucks for the tang!!

Im not trying to sound sarcastic, but in nature dont clowns have to pair with other (non-related) clowns? They would be inbred and have birth defects if not, right? * regarding pairing of similar species.

That sounds fine. it would help speed your cycle process if you actually took some sand, rock and water from your main tank and added it to the small one. im sure you already know this, but keeping your water in good condition is a lot more critical in such a small tank.

yeah, Weazil is right. Most ciclids are brackish and stay in rivers near the ocean so they get some salt. Actually, the same is true for most freshwater puffers and several others as well. I have actually never seen one in that high of salinity before tho.

i agree with ophiura, your pH, salinity, ammonia & nitrites are a little off. The EXACT same thing happened to me. My cleaner was doing great in the LFS and in the bag while floating. He died like 15-20 mins after putting in tank. My parameters were all good. After that incident i use SWF.com...

First of all, does "a few" mean three? I wouldnt suggest cycling with live fish, but three is too many anyways. Most likely, its the damsels keeping the ammonia up and your biofilter cant develop fast enough to keep up and convert to nitrite/ate. Did you start with live sand?? If not, you might...
