The swing in temp could definitely be a suspect. Is this the same time the fish died? I was thinking that something like copper could have been in your tank, but I think that the corals would have died as well.
Baserock on the bottm and LR on top sounds like a plan to me. Not sure how long it will take for the baserock to become "live" but it will happen over time.
Once the tank is cycled, you can add a clean-up crew. SWF sells packages that contain everything you'll need. Basically a bunch of...

I think you'll find that most people don't have any type of "filter". They don't use a HOB or wet/dry (which I thought were the same...
Unfortantally the hobby is expensive. Especially when you are setting up the tank. I've spent well over $1500 already on a 29 gallon tank and its only a month old.
No, you do not need a protein skimmer to have a sucessful reef tank. But having a protein skimmer will not hurt anything and will...

You said in this post that you did have a protien skimmer. And what happened to all your fish?

theiskid- i know no one is an expert here. all i want is what people did on their own tank. if 10 people post their setups and answer my questions on what they have and did, then i can balance it out. ofcourse i dont need people to tell me, you need to spend another...

rossim, that really is true that they don't have add a lot of bioload to your tank, but I always liked to tell someone beginning their reef tank so start adding only one or two at a time.
Agreed :)
I used a turkey baster to blow the sand off. You'll probably create a small cloud of sand again, but it'll clear up really quick. The turkey baster is great for feeding also :)
I first bought a Seaclone 100 HOB skimmer (paid way to much for it). It worked good as a hang-on back (HOB) but was a little noisy (not all that bad). I set up my sump and decided to move it down there and it was extremely loud without the "J" tube. Wasn't really working that well in the sump...
Tanks looks great! As mentioned before, you could use a little more rock on the left, but that will come with corals as you buy them. Tank will look really nice once done!
I have a 29 gallon with 130 watts PC lighting. Should be good for softies and LPS. I think you can also get a PC that fits the top with a little more wattage.
A sump is not required, but most people would say that they definitely won't hurt. I have an easy 10 gallong sump set up next to the...
Is it possible that the water you are using to do the water changes has nitrates in it? Don't think it would, but not sure where else to look. Anyone else???
What do you want to contain in the sump? Do you want a fuge area? If not, its really easy to put together a simple sump. I have one set up with a 10 gallon tank and don't even have any baffels.
While I do agree that you should only add one or two corals at a time to a tank, I've heard that they really do not have that much of a bioload and more, in theory, can be added at a time.
