    Grupers anyone own 1

I have a marine betta (grouper) in my reef tank. Hes been there about 6 mo now. He doesnt bother anything. I DO make sure I dont buy anything new he could fit into his mouth though. He eats silversides and chopped squid w/ zoe. I have heard they can begin to eat other tankmates, but I...

    resorvoir + quarantine tank

what kind of tank do you have? FO, REEF, etc. Also i would be very leery of using staight tap water in mixing new water, even if you are aging it. You could have lots of bad things in your tap water. Heavy metals, phos, etc. You could just set up the smaller tank, let it cycle and use it as...

    Suppliment problem

when i add supplements, which is daily, i turn my skimmer off for about an hour. then it goes back on. It has worked well for me thus far. I don't know if it helps or not, but my LFS guy said he does it both at the store, and in his own tank at home.

I need a thumbs up/opinions from you guys

I have bought about 90 pounds of LR over the net. I have had very good success with it. I got a few very large pieces, some large and many smaller. However, I do very much agree with Salisbury A.D., in that when I wanted some specific rock, I HAD to go to my LFS to get the shape and sizes I...

    UV sterilizer

Has anyone been able to tell if a UV sterilizer helps with ICK? I have 2 small hippo tangs in my reef tank and would get one if it helps. (tank raised and bought together, just FYI) I had an outbreak and they are currently in the hospital tank with the resident damsel.

    skimmer problems?

I have had this problem as well with my skimmer. I just give it the "gentle whack" to get it going. LOL Sometimes my skimmer isn't mixing enough air in either. I take a coffe cup of boiling water and let the air intake hose suck it through. This will clean out any goop build up you may have...

Hiya From the Reef Board Area

I have a marine betta (grouper) I have heard and read they can be housed with panther groupers. They can both get pretty big though, but they are both VERY cool fish. They will eat just about anything they can fit into thier mouths though so think about sizes of tankmates (even inverts) when...

    Torch and Hammer coral

I have both these corals in my tank too. I do not let them touch as they are both classified as "aggressive corals" as far as I know. I think they will sting each other. I try to use the general rule of a few inches in between my corals.

    mushroom cuttings

I have read you can grow new mushrooms by cutting them in halves or quarters, as long as each part has some of the base attached. Has anyone done this? How did it turn out? I have several colonies of mushrooms and would like to do this if it is possible. Do you need any special additives /...

    cowrie snail

I had a cowrie for a while. He kept knocking over my corals, and on occasion would knock over a rock. I got rid of it for fear of damaging my corals. They are pretty much night time feeders in my experience. Then in the light they find a spot to sleep. It did do a great job in the algea...

    over heating

My friend and I had this problem also. We went to radio shack and bought small compter fans, used to cool hard drives, we installed them in our hoods and set them up with the light timer so the fan circulates air under the hood when the lights are on. My temp has been really stable ever since...

    Sump

I'm the new guy here. I have a 80 gal reef and about a 40 gal sump. The sump is where all my "unsightly suff" is hidden in the cabinet. Skimmer, heater, pumps etc. it is very easy to maintain with a sump as was metioned previously. Topping off h2o and adding supplements and so forth. I...
