    what is better F.O.T_ R.T _L.R.W.F

It would depend on the fish. Not all fish will do well in a reef environment and some do horrible without alot of rock.

hot or cold water to RO/DI unit?

Also hot water will have alot more junk in it. Hotwater heaters have a tendency to collect garbage over time and release it.

    Keeping pH in balance

Sorry didn't mean to imply that baking soda "fixed" Ph. As I stated at the top, if your calcium and alk are where they need to be Ph should be where it needs to be.... at least that is what is says in the FAQ and archives. EDIT: oh and water movement.

Don't know how much marble chips are (or what they are) but it is hard to beat baking soda (especially if you cook it).

    how powerheads work

@ jdecter Watch the store links. You are on the SWF stores website. Not cool to post someone elses store. Just giving you a heads up. On topic. MaxiJets are cheap, last forever, work with wavemakers and have several mods to make them even better.

    Are refractometers worth the $$?

I would also suggest reading the latest issue (2006-12) of the online magazine - reefkeeping (dot) com. There is an article on refractometers and how to make sure they are accurate (they can be just as whacked out of the box as a hydrometer), how to get them accurate and keep them there. Summary...

You will find Ph to be lowest in the morning before your lights come on and climb during the day and back down during the night so...

    UV Lights

Think of it this way...really really small things get eaten by really small things which get eaten by small things which get eaten by fish and corals. You eliminate the really really small and really small with UV. Small has nothing to eat. So they go away too. Now if you have fish and corals...

    Nautilus

A cephalopod that is nocturnal, likes cool water and is a predator. Probably not even legal to get one and difficult to keep if you did... so probably not good for your tank... Unless you are talking about Nautilus brand skimmers.... Or you want to buy your fish an exercise machine...

If you have LPS, SPS, Clams, Coralline Algae, Halimeda or any other calcium munching entity you will have to add Calcium and Carbonate routinely.
