SUN CORAL. Someone pleeeeze offer up some experience, testimony, and advice!!!

HT, I've admired the Sun Coral too. Then I remember what I've read about it......it is not photosynthetic. It has to be fed by hand and each polp has to be feed seperately. I've also read that the polys open mostly at night, when the lights are off, so you don't really get to enjoy them as...

    Attinic benifient

Guy, Thanks. I think I follow you. To make sure, I'd like to get real specific about my lighting...... Last June (2002) I upgraded my NO lighting to a VHO/MH combo unit I purchased from Hamilton Lighting. The ballast is, I believe magnetic, but I'm really not sure. It's very heavy, and gets...

silicates, how do i get rid of them?

Aly, Reverse Osmosis/DeIonized water. You can buy it from many LFS, often in grocery stores or places like Walmart, or you can buy an RO/DI unit for your home water system. Jim

are hang on filters worth anything?

Jackson, There's a thread from HairTrigger about 4 pages back titled something like "Phosphate sponge, yeah or nay". There are a number of suggestions in that one about products used by some of the members. I've been using PhosGuard by SeaChem and it works well for me. Jim

    P04 and silicates

col, Aquarium Pharmacuticals sells a portable unit that I bought. The unit runs $30 to $40 depending on where you get it. The media refills will DI around 50 to 100 gallons of water and cost between $15 and $20 to replace. I use about 5 gallons a week and this one is good for me. Jim

What's the word on phosphate sponges? Yea or nay?

PhosGuard can be added at any time. It actually can be taken out after a short period, dried, and re-used at a later time. It will not, BTW, leach the phosphate or Silicates back into the water column, even if it's "full". I just leave mine in for a week, test and remove it. Jeez, I sound...

My light schedule is very similar to mlm's. The MH is on for 8 hours and the VHO actinics are a little over 11. Jim

What's the word on phosphate sponges? Yea or nay?

HT, The stuff I use is PhosGuard by Seachem. I by it in 2 liter containers and that will treat 600 gallons of sw. Last time I bought it I paid $26 for the 2L. It says it removes phosphates and silicates! I didn't know about the silicate removal. I examined the container carefully and...

    Green algae problem

korgull, Sounds like you've isolated the problem......too much light. As jon and I suggested, cut back on your light time. I'd check your phosphates just to be safe. The stuff I mentioned about your stock, particularly the hippo tang, is an issue you'll need to face. I know. I had one in...

    Green algae problem

korgull, Well.......I don't want to sound like the "Tang Police";) but.......your hippo tang is going to get too big for your tank, if it isn't already. Hippo's need a lot of room to swim. Prevailing opinion is hippos shouldn't be in anything smaller than 80 to 100 gallon tank. I don't know...

    Green algae problem

korgull, I have a number of thoughts on possible causes of your algea. Kev asked you how long your tank has been set up? How long? Hair algea is a normal part of a tanks cycle. Is your tank pretty new? If your tank is established, the elevated ammonia reading may be because it looks to me...

What's the word on phosphate sponges? Yea or nay?

HT, I agree with you. I use RO/DI water, run a skimmer, don't overfeed.....and every few months, like clockwork, my Phosphates are higher than I want them. I can actually tell without testing, although I do, by how fast the algea grows on my glass. At those times I use a sponge called...

    anybody from NE Pa?

I'm more in southeastern Pa. but go to Too Fishy all the time. Was just there Saturday. I've had great luck finding things there and if he doesn't have what you want , he'll order it for you. His prices are a little high but he often runs specials that make things a little more affordable. Jim

    Help

Don't medicate. Hyposalinity is the answer. You can do a search on this board to get lots of info. But let's get back to some things Susan asked: how long has your tank been running? What are all your water parameters...ammonia, nitrite, nitrate? Are you sure your cycle is finished? If it's...
