    Not black Ich! This sounds like Oomycetes, a type of water mold infection. Try separating the fish and treating him with Erythromycin or Maracyn (not Maracyn 2 this will not work).

    Black dots are fish lice (Argulus) You need to quarantine the fish and treat him with some Praziquantel for 3-5 days. When a fish has Cryptocarayon Irritans (Ich), it will be covered in white dots.

    Usually when a heater fails, it will stress the fish quite a bit. Just like bringing them home in the bag... the temp drops. This will make a fish lose color and act docile. He should be fine in a couple of days, if not... Keep an eye out for Ich (Cryptocarayon) within the next 7-10 days...
