    Hey Scott S !!

I've got all the wood cut. Stand, tank and hood. The stand is assembled and primed. The hood is assembled. Now putting together the actual tank bit. Sure hope the thing doesn't fall apart when filled with water. I'm pretty sure it won't, but . . . . If it holds water I'll send pics. If...

    Hey Scott S !!

Still lurking around here? Check out: Safe Reefkeeping Guess my ISP changed things and I missed my ISP's spam. It's about 80% done and I've since pretty much given up on the topic. Time better spent joining the 'research before you buy' or the 'flat earth society' as convincing people about...

lowcost needs for a 180 reef tank?

Sure - fire up the 30 as a reef tank. Make all your mistakes on the smaller (cheaper) scale. That way you'll only nuke 30 gal worth of critters and not 180 gal. So it's what? 1/6 of the cost? Then you can use the stuff (LS/LR) from the 30 gal to seed your 180, or just transfer it from the 30...

You can put it on a timer if need be.

    Instant Ocean, making good

Which leads to the inevitable conclusion that IO is no better than any other salt. I find Mr. Shimek's argument about high level of trace elements in synthetic salts persuasive. And will be going with a product that more accurately mimics NSW. (Natural Sea Water for the TLA challenged). :)...

not alot of changes in cycling?

I suspect that you'll have a green algea bloom coming up pretty soon. Once you start seeing the green algea - add the cleanup critters.

it's been 5 weeks and my tank hasn't cycled yet, did I miss it?

Sounds to me like it's cycled. Once you get the algea bloom - you've pretty much cycled in my limited experience. Ditto on the crushed coral.

    Will light crash my DSB?

Light has no effect of a DSB. If you think about it - only the top 1/8" (?) inch is not in perpetual darkness.

    Keeping Deep Sand Bed healthy

"Ronald L. Shimek" knows about as much about DSB as anyone - and actively writes about them. I'd suggest searching out some of his writings. My impression is that it's not what you do have, but what you don't have - that's the tricky bit about keeping DSB's active. 'Cause lots of things see a...

    Umbrella Mushrooms Not Happy

Calm water - moderate light. Usually on the bottom of the tank somewhere. My rule of thumb - if the current blows them away from where I put them - it's too much.

I tried it. Timsomethingorother has success. I didn't. Found out my Dendronephthya LOVES the stuff. Made some of the mushrooms grumpy for a couple of hours.

    Intermittent skimmer / carbon use?

He's big huh? Eric "The Refrigerator" Borneman? :) :D Sure people run stuff 7/24 and it works. So if I can get by on less activated carbon - that's a good thing 'cause it saves me money not buying as much. If I can get by with less skimming - that's a good thing 'cause it'll use less...

    Intermittent skimmer / carbon use?

Many people only use activated carbon intermittently. Anyone use their skimmer intermittently as well? (Yes I've been reading Borneman again. :) But Bingham talks about how the skimmers remove trace elements. And it seems that it's this trace element removal that seems to motivate people not...

    I need a consensus!

Boy you must be new. About the only consensus that reefer's ever reach is ... probably on the water qaulity numbers? SG, KALK, Ca etc? Otherwise we'd miss out on all the variety of different filtering techniques and methods. :) Oh! Maybe we agree that those filter/skimmers deals are not very...
