Mixing LR for best ref shape

LR of different origins come in quite a range of shapes - spherical, plates, branched. It seems to me that I could get a varied reef superstructure by carefully using a combination of LR types, i.e., more compact Fiji at the base and other types for ledges, and so forth. Do any of you use this...

    RO/DI water supply connection

The unit does not require an electric outlet, does it? A picture of the "Pureflo" shows a power cord.

    125 or 180 AGA

I'm waffling between a 125 or a 180 tank. My concers with the 125 are that I will not be happy with the 18" front to back and that it will make it less convenient to work in the tank because the lights will occupy more of the top's area. What do you 125 owners think of the front to back...

    RO/DI water supply connection

Thanks. What type of connection to the cold water supply does the Typhoon II need. The same type of threaded faucet that one cdonnects a clothes washer hose to? I expect the builder will ask what I want on the end of the teed off pipe.

    RO/DI water supply connection

I'm just starting to have a house built and the builder is asking for a list of options. I will have a laundary tub in the garage with hot and cold taps. If I get a Typhoon III RO/DI unit (which seems to be highly recommended) should I have the builder put in a second cold water supply. Or...

    Freshest live rock - where?

I would apprecate suggestions on ordering live rock for the 180-gallon I will be setting up. When I set up a 55-gallon tank, the live rock came from the local lfs. Selection was limited and the rock was mostly devoid of visible lilfe except for a few spots of coralline. I would really like to...

    Refractometer help

I've got access to a good lab balance so it's not a problem. In my earlier post, when I used IO as the calibration mix, I forgot about all of the components that didn't contribute to salinity. So, when it measured at only about 32 ppt I was upset until I realized that and used table salt instead.

    Refractometer help

So, when my refractometer arrived, I made sure a drop of distilled water read zero ppt. Then I wanted a second calibration point so I carefully weighed 3.5 grams of Instant Ocean mix and dissolved it in 100 ml of distilled water. What do you think it read? What do you think I used as my next...

Wanting to do the reef tank ThAnG

Mark, I have a 55-gallon tank that I converted over to a reef tank. Some of my difficulties stem from the fact that it is only 13" front-to-back. I put on JBJ power compact lights and a HOB skimmer. For the lights, I got the JBJ legs that allow one to lift the front of the lights up on the...

    Fish food recs please

My fish community consists of a royal gramma, tomato anemonefish, two blue-green chromis, six-lined wrasse and a regal tang. For the past two years they have been fed exclusively cubes of frozen brine shrimp, mysid shrimp and krill. I'm beginning to think that this should not be their sole...

    Help w/skimmer

I assume you're taling about adjusting the water height in the skimmer column (cylinder). The height of the water return pipe on the right (facing it) is adjustable. See where it exits from the cylinder. Loosen the retaining ring and gently move the pipe upward to raise the level in the...
