    Canopy 101

The fans are 420 mm (~ 4") variable speed (76-101 cfm) computer fans. I haven't had any trouble with noise, but I mounted rubber gaskets between the fans and the wood. They also came with brass fan covers that look really nice. I bought them from an online computer hardware retailer for like...

    Low Budget Canopy Tips

In building my canopy this summer, I came across a couple of ways to save money on your DIY canopy. I just thought I'd throw 'em out there for anyone interested. 1. Use PC (personal computer, not power compact) fans. I bought 120mm (~4" diameter) variable speed fans (76-101cfm) for $12 a...

EMS- I don't have real detailed plans, but I have lots of sketches/pictures/measurements. If you need anything specific, let me know. If I don't have it on paper, I can just measure my top. It's 2x175 MH and 2x48" VHO actinics with cooling fans and glass shield built in.

    28 watts of light

I think it would be fine. I think it's Eclipse that makes a 12 gallon nanocube that comes with a 28w PC. There's 5 of them set up at my LFS and they all have low light corals (shrooms and zoos) in them. And they seem to be thriving, but they are all in the top half of the tank.

    Canopy 101

I made a top for my 55 earlier this summer. If you have access to jointer and a planer, I would recommend not shopping for wood at Home Depot. I got red oak from a local sawmill for $2/board ft. Home Depot was charging like 4 or 5 times that much. Let me know if you need any plans/advice on...

    MH too much for caulerpa?

I had an extra 100 watt metal halide that I decided to run on my fuge. I added some grape caulerpa to the fuge and it appears to be bleaching white. Could the MH be too intense for the caulerpa? Just wanted to solicit a few opinions. The bulb in the light is a 6500k 100w venture. Thanks...

    New Oak MH Hood

Thanks for the comments. Reflectors are definitely my next step. I'm also working on a small cabinet to house my ballasts and wires. I just couldn't resist putting the top on the tank and getting it running. stuckinfla - Here's the shot of the back (it's taken from the front because I...

    New Oak MH Hood

I'll post a pick of the back tonight. My friend suggested making the door on the front open like a drawbridge and it was definitely a great idea. It makes an awesome shelf for feeding/dosing/etc...I would definitely recommend it. Are you going to use fans or just have the back open like you...

OK.....wood is cut for hood and lights were ordered today, but....

I think that you should stain the edges of the boards. it should only affect the wood's appearance. I would stain before assembly and then use a spar urethane after you put everything together. I just finished a MH hood in oak, so if you have any Q's feel free to ask. I posted a couple of...

    New Oak MH Hood

ok, I got this posting thing figured out. My tank has been severely neglected for the past month due to the excessive amount of time spent on this hood. But now she's done and I can get back to my babies and my water quality (not good.) Any questions/comments about the hood will be greatly...
