    Lighting advice needed...

Thanks jakebtc, It's hard to tell from the pic how high The Current USA "orbit" fixtures sit. Looks to be about 3-6 inches from the top of the tank, but I could be wrong. I'm also looking at some MH only fixtures in the 250-350 watt range.

    Lighting advice needed...

Hi folks, I've had my 36 gal. bowfront tank for about 1 1/2 years now. Residents consist of two false percs, aprox 50 lbs of LR, a few Astria snails and several blue leg hermit crabs. A little boring I know! Well, after learning the ins + outs of my tank for the past two years, I finally feel...

    Best powerhead for 30 gal

I think you would be fine with on Maxi 900 and a decent powerfilter depending upon whether or not you want to run a filter. I have a 36 bow with a Maxi 900 and Aquaclear 200, and it provides quite a bit of circulation. IMO two maxi 900's would make the water a little two turbulent in a 30.

    Are my false percs starving?

Thanks Bang. They appear to be very healthy, I had no idea how much these guys like to roam as most of the clowns I've ever seen basically stayed put around an anemone. Hopefully they will start to adjust.

    Are my false percs starving?

I purchased two tank-raised false percs this weekend, and they don't seem to like any of the food I've been offering. I've tried flake, pellet, and frozen brine, all to no avail. The fish simply swim up to the food and swim right away. They appear to be healthy and hungry as they are constantly...

    Are nitrates killing my inverts?

Thanks Bang. I'm still trying to understand the refractometer because I thought you could have an s.g. and it's ppt vary depending upon what temp the sample is. But on my refractometer, 1.025 is the only s.g. that can be 35 ppt. Is that because my refractometer automatically callibrates for...

    Are nitrates killing my inverts?

I use the refractometer I bought from this site to measure both tank water and the water I use to due changes with. Calibrated it with distilled water. My tank was a little low at 1.023, so I made my water changes at 1.025 to start bringing it up. Tank now reads just between 1.024 and 1.025...

    Are nitrates killing my inverts?

So is 20 ppm an acceptable level of nitrates?

    Are nitrates killing my inverts?

So I could be overfeeding even when there are no remnants of the pellets left each day? Guess they could still be in there hidden somewhere. I just didn't want the little guys to starve. Have 30 lbs sand, 10 of it was live when I started the tank about 3 months ago. Have 45 lbs LR. For...

    Are nitrates killing my inverts?

Hi all. Lost a peppermint shrimp yesterday (and another is now MIA). Also lost 2 turbo snails last week. Water parameters are as follows: Temp: 80 degrees and doesn't fluctuate Am: 0 Trites: 0 PH: 8.2 Salinty/gravity: 1.024/34 ppt Trates: 20 ppm After my tank cycled I did a 5 gallon water...

Invasion of the "Baby Peppermint Shrimp"

Leona, I just had a similar hatching last night. Hundreds of little peppermints swimming around. I have the same dillema as you, just have inverts right now so no fish to eat the little guys. I guess they'll just die off?

Lights on, but no one is home...

Hey Baylisc, I kept my lights off during the cycle because I didn't want to encourage a lot of algae growth. Not really sure if it would matter anyway. PS - Off topic. But if you don't mind answering, how do you like the USA light? I'm thinking about getting their 24" PC orbit light. I assume...

    Time/Money Commitment

I can give you a decent estimate of my costs. I have a 36 gallon bow tank with 45 lbs LR, 10 lbs LS and 20 lbs regular sand. Livestock: 20 blueleg hermits 20 turbo snails 3 peppermint shrimp If I had to guess, I would say I've spent about $900 getting this thing setup. Tank and stand were about...

    Emperor 280 filter - $25 plus shipping

Tried to edit subject, but I guess you can't. Reduced price to $20. Paid $49.99 at LFS. Used three months. Works perfectly, but I wanted to switch to Aquaclear for the simpler design. Comes with one unused filter. Located in Tampa, FL. Please be patient if you respond to this ad as I can only...

    Changing filters and keeping trates?

No livestock yet. Want to get my water parameters perfect before doing so. Everything else (amonia, trites) reads zero except for my trates. I just didn't want my tank to undergo a mini cycle from removing all of my filter media at once. But it seems like my water has enough trates to sustain...

    Changing filters and keeping trates?

Hi all. This weekend I switched my filter from an Emperor 280 to an Aquaclear 50. Emperor had been running for about 3 months or so. Just want to know if what I did was necessary. I took the Emperor's bio wheel out and left it in the tank to keep some trates in there while the bio bag of the...

    carbon???

That's a good question. I run it all the time too but only because the emperor filters come with carbon already inside them.

Salinty gravity 1.023 - too low?

Thanks Bang. My water temp is 78, so I think 1.023 puts my ppt a little low at around 32-33 ppt.

Salinty gravity 1.023 - too low?

Is there a nominal gravity you should keep your salt at? Am I within that range?

    Correct way to top off?

Hey Bang Guy, What about adding a gallon all at once but slowly (say over a few hours), ala the square drink dispenser jugs people were talking about before. Not sure if they would allow such a slow flow though.
