    Lighting Question

If you can afford metal halides, they'll be your best bet. MH lights cover so much more of the spectrum, with greater intensity, than anything else. They're pricy, but you'll probably like the reflected color of your inhabitants better, and most of your corals will like the MH's better as well.

    Gun Control

Mimzy, you're on to something! Seeing as though 43,000 people were killed in 2004 as a result of traffic fatalities, I think we should ban motor vehicles!.....Or maybe we should try to just drive safer. I'm confused now. By banning motor vehicles wouldn't we also ban over 43,000 fatalities...

    What is this sump/equipment?

By the way, stay away from the "ceramic shot". While ceramic sounds nice to aquarists, to the abrasives industry ceramic is also known as silicon carbide and tungsten carbide. Don't use it, please! :happyfish

Any Do's or Don'ts for plumbing

Amen to threaded unions. They sure beat trying to spin your fuge on its axis. :hilarious

    Alternative for Metal Halide?

The good thing about the T5's is that you can pack a lot of light into a congested hood.

    Gun Control

Reviewing the etiology of the second ammendment seems to answer most of the questions posed here. If the people want guns, the people will have guns. As I recall, America is still "We the People"... I seem to remember reading that somewhere.

    Turning wet/dry into refugium help?

I'm not sure about your specific set up, but I'll cover the Six main points. First, ditch all the bioballs and trays. Second, let the overflow go into the first chamber with the protein skimmer. Third build your fuge in the largest (possibly central) chamber. Four, baffle or filter your fuge...

    Power strips w/built in timers

The powerstrips that you need are home made. Buy a nice Nema enclosure and wire it up. It'll be a compact enough set up that's waterproof and serviceable. I've seen powerstrips with built in timers, but you're drawing from two circuits at a time to distribute your 15 amps of draw+. With a...

    southern Wisconsin

Style, What LFS do you typically use? I've been to a couple in the area and haven't been impressed. Ever since the big one next to the Big Lots of College closed, there really hasn't been anything to replace it.

    Plumbing question

Are 90 degree turns OK or should I try and stick with more flowing angles? 90° elbows are pretty standard. Across short runs, there's little to be gained or lost with street angles. Does it matter which side has the overflow and which side has the return from the sump? Does what matter...

    blacklight ok for moon light?

Chipmaker is right on with his assessment. You're not going to harm anything with a hardware store "blacklight". The blacklight may make some of your corals flouresce, and that would be a pretty cool bit.

    Bulkhead's

Also, don't underestimate the handy nature of a few extra valves and unions for maintenance. Unions are great things when you've got to do disassembly. They allow you to unthread pipes without spinning your entire sump on it's axis :hilarious Valves will let you isolate areas for maintenance...

    What is this sump/equipment?

To produce a fluidized silica bed reactor, you'll need to commit one of your cylinders. You'd power one of the cylinders with a submerged powerhead. You pump water into the bottom of the cylinder, through a "bed" of silica sand, and out the top. Three things are important to this set-up. The...

    What is this sump/equipment?

A protein skimmer you've got, and will certainly want to keep. If you decide to create a refugium to grow macro algae and pods, you may want to minimize other systems. Still, the two cylinders that are linked at the bottom would be perfect for a sulfur denitrator followed by an aragonite...

If it's just a nano, then you'd get enough flow through a 3/4" bulkhead.

Aquarium Set Up with Sump on Lower Level

Putting your sump in the basement is certainly an accomplishable task. Just don't put it in your laundry room, or room where you'd be generating dust from treated lumber. A big advangtage of a basement sump is that your basement is significantly cooler in the summer months. Depending on the...

    My Yellow Tang

I had some powerheads for current and one of the venturi tubes started sucking air and distributing fine bubbles throughout my aquarium. The mushroom anemones hated it. They formed a mucous layer around themselves and constantly shed the bubbles that came into contact with them. I'd assume...

    Bulkhead Fitting?

Gravity feed through a 1/2" bulkhead isn't going to be very much. Your maximum flow wouldn't even be 150 GPH. Also, bear in mind that your bulkhead is never fully submerged, so it would be far less than 150 GPH. It's like Suidd alludes to, you're really not going to increase flow all that much.
