I have been going to get a Goby to sift sand, but understand they jump out of the tank unless covered. Is this true?

I have had a GBTA for 4 month. Until the last week he has been happy. He landed at the bottom of a rock touching the substrate. He hasn't moved but an inch or 2 either way. I thought he would move closer to the light. He hasn't been doing good at all in the last week. Everything checks out fine...
