    Copepods

I thought sand wasn't alive till there were creatures in the sand? this is my first time with sand, had cc before (I know evil. lol) nothing but live rock and sand is currently in the tank. and just a few pieces of rock. I still have to move all my live rock, but was waiting for the cycle to...

Do I Still Need to Cycle tank?

uh? if you add all new water, then you need to cycle. throw in a piece of raw dead shrimp or a few to start the cycle. salt has nothing to do with a cycle. many don't cycle fresh, but i do.

    Copepods

I'm debating making an order (well, had the cart filled when I thought my final price would be $80, but my $20 credit came off of the live good total not the real total, so now i'm not sure I want to spend $100 to order. It's hard enough coming up with 79, worth of stuff to order for one...

Where did you get your knowledge?

I spend many years here reading and asking questions, some thing I've learned by trail and error. I have Marine Fishes and Marine Invertebrates. LOVE those books.

cycle question (I have ammonia and trates?)

yep. I know it takes time to cycle. Ammonia then nitrites, then nitrates. I've cycled before...but never had ammonia after the ammonia turned to nitrites...then nitrates... so this is normal?

cycle question (I have ammonia and trates?)

I tested my water today. I have ammonia and nitrates. Ammonia was in the harmful range and nitrates were b/w zero and 20. (strip test). last week, I had no ammonia, and had nitrites...(didn't test for nitrates). I started the cycle with raw shrimp start of jan. (75gl tank, sand (not live yet) a...

    new to salt water....

I just kept the tank dark that day/night. I don't like any of the reef packages. I LOVE swf.com inverts, but the reef packages don't really work for one tank-at least not for me. Never mind, they've changed them up! 20-55 Gallon Reef Package -you don't need 30 snails in a 20-55gl tank or two...

    Nitrates still not going down!

I had cc for years and never had my nitrates that high. Are you vacuuming the cc with each water change? You have to vacuum cc to clean the crap out. check your water source, have the lfs test your water, just to make sure your results are correct. I got bad results once, not fun. cut back on...

Test kit help..!@$ a API color card Hades!!!!!!!

it's a pain. BUT, after awhile you tend to learn what color something should be at what level. I know what zero looks like. Test using your kit. then get a second opinion at the fish store. Then compare. (not everytime, just to help you figure out the shades). It would be great if the fish...

    new to salt water....

do you want to keep the clown? if yes, then move the lr around, add your new fish and keep the tank lights off and the room dark. This way, the clown will have to re-established its territory. I had a killer clown as well. Sinner bagged him, moved the lr around, added the new fish (damsel), with...

    Simple question about Tangs

according to the compatibility chart (which I'm not sure i'm allowed to post), it says caution. If I remember correctly, tangs with a different body shape are more likely to get along. The bigger the tank, the more swimming room, the better chances. My book shows the bodies are different, but...

    ph question

water flow is the filter (Emperor 400) and a power head. the sand is Nature's Ocean Premium Marine Substrates-I don't know if that's aragonite-I was told last year that was good to buy. the salt was IO (I don't use IO, but I had the box they sent me after I had a bad batch; I use Oceanic now...

    curing sand

I got a pm about the links. sorry, I'm used to posting links on other sites. I added the sand, then added the saltwater once my ro unit was hooked up. Are you saying I need to mix the sand up? The tank currently has sand and saltwater, with the filter and power head on, I've started the cycle...

    ph question

ah!!!! not another bad batch. crap. I had a bad batch of salt kill my inverts but my starfish. I was NOT happy. I changed brands. But, I used the old brand, new box to mix up the 75gl. IO sent me a replacement box, i refused to used it, but didn't want to waste so I used it start this tank...

    ph question

no, I didn't. so, the ph should be within range? even though there's only two pieces of lr in the tank? If I'm not adding anything, (other than salt and ro water) what would cause them to be off? When did Broomer became not a shark? in my day, he was. I've read his post before...and my heads...

    ph question

I don't test cal, alk and mag. I know they are somehow related ph, but never understood how and since i don't add chemicals to my tanks, it was never an issue (minus once but I didn't need test to tell me my water was screwed up-the dead inverts did that -bad batch of salt) I don't know the...
