    The way back machine

I still have a fluidized sand bed filter out in my back room somewhere I saved it in case I ever felt the need to modify it into a media reactor, if they ever stopped for any reason you had to empty them and start fresh or the bacterial crash and reslutant ammonia spike would wipe your tank. I...

    The way back machine

hahah Yeah i built some lime wood skimmers myself in the past, surprisingly they did work fairly well. not like the modern skimmers we have now. and the tanks were slate bottom, not granite. we used the plenum system too in a lot of our regular tanks but our kiddie pool "lagoon" the theory was...

    The way back machine

ok I just replied on some ones thread (ericb's) and it got me thinking about some of the crazy crap we tried way back to get stuff to work, grow and actually survive. So please sit down pull up a chair by the campfire and tell me a story of one of the great or not so great things you tried WAY...

Smaller place, bigger tank...My 200DD build

Eric get the Ro/di up and running, then do a "reset" water change 50% at least. wait 24 hours then do it again. there are so many thing we cant check and don't have the ability to predict that can effect coral growth. before you think its the lights, keep in mind years ago some of us were...

slow and steady, lots of cyano right now from the old sand, probably going to have to throw in some phos ban. I can't seem to get my camera white balance right under this 20k to show proper color on the corals. they are coloring up nicely (well a couple are) once I figure out the settings on...

How long do you store SW before using it?

some reef salts I have noticed over the years when you leave them in the mixing buckets will precipitate quite a lot, I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that its because they have elevated levels well over NSW levels that if not used for water changes (which when adding to depleted...

definitely time to add to the CUC there is enough hair to add my astreas and it's been long enough for nass to find food in the sand now, having a cool green and red cyano burst right now, almost time for a waterchange as well. some of the DOD frags are doing well one of those birds nest is...

good photosynthetic rate too, huge jump in early algal growth from the other lights, finally the tank can go through the ugly phase, so I can get that out of thew way. getting light algae on everything from the sand to the glass one of the rocks had signs of cyano when I bought it and now its...

the steroids are on a decending dosage, the pain killers are intended to break the cycle the steroids are for recovery. on the bright side the CT scan came back negative. So I talked to yet ANOTHER specialist and he suggested a chiropractor because the pain and tingling in his mind is screaming...

Why have my pencil urchins grown green fur?

you might do more harm than good, most urchins don't do well exposed to air. you would be better off plucking what you can with tweezers or forceps while they are still in the tank.

Why have my pencil urchins grown green fur?

yeah thats green hair algae. as for whats going on... algae is growing on your urchins spines. and an asterina star has hitched a ride on one too. You probably don't have anything capable of grazing in between his spines to clean em off for him.

yeah so an update of sorts. had a dr apt this morning and i'm going for a CT scan in a couple hours.... they have put me on steroids and given me an injection of something or other. The injection hasn't done a damned thing and the prednesone is just making me hungry. He is thinking it may be a...

    What is the next step

not having fish in a reef is a mistake in my opinion. you want fish, fish poop is coral food. as for all those additives thats up to you, generally I try to use water changes to keep my parameters in line as much as possible. once the reef is fully stocked and really growing that becomes...
