    Water Softner

I just had a water softner installed in my house today. Are there any concerns about using this type of water in my tank? I could bypass the conditioned water and use the regular hard water if I had to. Mike

need analysis on my water tests

Just wanted some input on my recent water tests. ph is 8.2 ammo. is 0 nitrite is 0 nitrate is 20. I think these are all fine but I recently purchased a KH and GH(general hadness test kit. The KH was 11. One book I read said it should be about 7. Another said it should be between 15 and...

    To protein skim or not?

Thanks for the advice. I think I'll take it. But is there a certain model that's not to thick? I bought a SeaClone the other day but returned it, for two reasons. One, most posts did not recommend it and second, it didn't fit behind my tank! I didn't think I was going to have one when I...

    To protein skim or not?

It seems like no one is really sure what they do. Everytime time I ask someone what they specifically do, they don't know. They just use one because "someone" said they should.

    To protein skim or not?

O.K. What's the final low-down on protein skimming. My 55 Gal. reef is only about a month and a half old now and I've been told don't worry about a skimmer yet since there would probably be nothing to skim yet. What does a ps actually skim? Is there a test to tell when I need it or not? Is...

    Sea clone Skimmer

Why a skilter or prism? Are they better? I also just bought a Sea Clone but haven't used it. I need 4" clearance behind the tank and only have about 3"(too heavy now to move). Are the other ones smaller? I know I could use it as a sump type but would rather not have that big thing in my tank.

    Lighting for anemone

Now correct me if I'm wrong but from what I've learned about in reading posts on anemone's, splitting is not the sign of a happy one, just the opposite. A happy anemone is supposed to grow big and fat. Any other comments?

    Nitrate levels at 40...

My latest reading for nitrate was 40. Is this tolerable? If not, how do I lower it? Tank contents: Ls, lr, crabs, shrimp, flaming scallop, pink-tipped anemone, maroon clown, blue damsel. Mike

    pink-tip anenome

I just added an anenome a few days ago and it seemed just fine for awhile. Today I noticed it wedged itself beetwen a rock and the glass and some of the tips of the tenacles were off. Does this happen when their sick or are one of my crabs having fun? Also I went to move it thinking that it...

    mechanical filtration poll

The more I read and listen to people about mechanical filtration, the more confused I get. I have a Fluval 304 with foam and carbon pads. Should it be used all the time, some of the time, or could a tank thrive without one at all?

    Serpent Stars legs falling off?

I've just recently placed some serpent stars that came with an invert package into my tank. The little black "hairs" on the legs and even some whole pieces of leg themselves seem to have fallen off. What's with this?

    UGF as plenum?

So what's my options? Will just leaving the plates there cause harm or should I go through the tortorous task of taking them out?

    UGF as plenum?

Thanks BurnNSpy. What about the water changes? Do you think this a good idea or does it just defeat the whole purpose?

    UGF as plenum?

Can anyone tell me what a plenum does and how I could use my converted ugf (took the powerheads out) as a plenum? I left the tubes in and thought about sucking the water from underneath with the powerheads for a water change. Any comments?

    UGF as plenum?

I recently disconnected my ugf as instructed. I was told that I could keep the trays on the bottom of the tank as a plenum. What's a plenum and how would I do this? I left the tubes in and was thinking I could use the powerhead to suck the water out from underneath for a water change. Any...
