UGF as plenum?

Can anyone tell me what a plenum does and how I could use my converted ugf (took the powerheads out) as a plenum? I left the tubes in and thought about sucking the water from underneath with the powerheads for a water change. Any comments?

I believe that the distance between ugf and bottom of than is too small to be an effective plenum. You will still need to use mess to keep the sand from sifting thru the ugf.
I think it is better to construct you plenum out of pvc.

I couldn't find Mr. Salty's answer in the fish only world, but I do know that you should NOT use a UGF for a plenum. The reason is that there are not enough holes in the UG plate to allow enough diffusion through the plate. It is very inexpensive to construct a plenum using light diffuser "eggcrate" material and some fiberglass mesh. It will cost less than $20 for an average size tank.
