Two more questions...

OfALegend, I think for LR, what I'm reading is that it would be good to have your skimmer running during the curing/cycling. I also answered your previous question on the fishing jumping/starving post. I got my LS/LR from Aquatic Critter and was able to cycle within 2 weeks. I don't have a...

    Jumping or starving fish?

OfALegend, Yes, I do go to Aquatic Critter. It is only 5-10 minutes from my home. They are usually very well stocked, and have a very knowledgeable staff. It is a two-family business, and they have plenty of fish, inverts, and supplies (as well as FW and Reptiles.) It is the nicest of the 3...

    Jumping or starving fish?

I've got a firefish that hasn't jump, but it definitely darts under LR whenever I walk by. I do have a plexiglass cover, though. I also have a scooter blenny that I haven't ever noticed eating anything (at least in the past week since I just got it). I feed live brine, frozen mysis, tenera...

    understanding spouse

My wife has been really supportive (also as long as the bills are paid ... ;) ) She really likes the final results and wants a bigger tank when we finally finish paying some interest free purchases off and getting some more furniture. She won't touch the tank, though, especially live brine...

    QT

I just setup a 10g QT, with pvc pipes from lowes. I bought a 10g starter kit with a mini-biowheel and an extra heater. I used water from the main tank and also a carbon bag from the main to to jump start the cycle time. However, I don't think my QT is fully cycled, yet. Just tested the water...

one of my yellow tangs died

I've got a small 1.5" Yellow Tang in QT right now. It has a voracious appetite though. I use Tenera Blue (rolled up and rubber-banded to a pvc pipe in the QT). I've also fed mysis shrimp and brine, and Formula 1 flake food. It seems to eat all the above. I think that if you don't have...

    Lawnmovers and Scooter Blennys

I just bought a scooter blenny, and currently have it in a QT with some other fisth I bought. I haven't noticed it eating anything, though. Is it just a slow eater/scavenger? I've tried tenera blue (for a yellow tang), brine and mysis (for a purple psuedo and tang) and flakes, but I've never...

    What's a safe distance

stupid newbie question, ahead... Is it ok to run carbon all the time? Is it detrimental? Why do you only run it for a few days a month? BTW, what is poly? Thanks... Danny

    Power PC's

y2says, how is the JBJ working out? I'm looking at a 36" 2-96watt for my 30g. This is all my LFS carries and it looks pretty durable. Thanks, Danny

    Clean Water Overkill

If you had enough LR and LS and a good refugium growing, could you skip the other filters? I've been reading that some are still recommending at least a protein skimmer. I've read also that trickle filters aren't good for the overabundance of nitrate they create.

    hi_lite lightscaping ?

looks a little gimmicky to me, but definitely cheaper than moonlights ;) I'm looking at some JBJ Lighting. Anyone ever hear of these. These are all the LFS carry. Seem to be pretty good, feature wise, and I...

    hi_lite lightscaping ?

Scott, under the section where you post messages, there is a section for "instant UBB Code". In that section, there is a URL button. If you click it, it will walk you through putting a url up.

    building a 5000 gal.+ tank

I saw this link from another site the other day. http://www.mr4000.com The guy there might be able to give some more advice. He has a nice setup as well. No sharks though.

    Stand Construction

WaterRat, Thanks for the advice. BTW, what is MDF?? And what do you "treat" the cabinet with after you put it together, so it is somewhat water and salt proof? Thanks again! Danny

My 125 soon to be system design

questions... does gravity maintain the water levels as shown in the graphic, or does adjusting a variable speed pump maintain the different levels? (basically, what causes the different sections not to dry out - fill too slowly or too quickly, etc.) Also, what are the two pipes going into the...

Refugiums!! store bought or home made?

thanks, ijji. oops... started on the previous message before you responded. Do you know what those containers I mentioned in the previous post are called?

Refugiums!! store bought or home made?

I also guess gravity is being used somewhere in your equation as well. Can I assume that you have some sort of j tube pulling from inside the tank to the outer container? (I'm not sure what those containers are called - some have the ridges/slots on the top of the container to pull in surface...

    Stand Construction

I'm planning on getting a 125g, but have a similar question about the stand. The stands available at LFSs seems to be made of fairly light duty wood (2x4 and some laminate). Is this fairly common? If I build a built-in wall stand out of 2x4's and use wood laminate for trim, will it be sturdy...

Refugiums!! store bought or home made?

ijji, Can you comment on what is pulling the water from inside the main tank to the outside container and then to the refugium? I assume a pump or powerhead is pushing water back to the main tank?

    Please HELP with lighting

has anyone heard of JBJ lighting? My LFS has a 36" Formosa - total 192 watts for around $280. I'm not sure whether it is VHO, PC, or NO. Any comments on this brand or other "complete hood" brands?
