I always hate reading these type of threads unfortuneitly for mr its my time to write 1. My parents told my they smelt a burning smell coming form my room at 4 in the morrning. At 6 I come out almost everything is dead, my flame angel and one of my original fish, a yellow tail damsel, and my cleaner shrimp
My dads old powerhead that i was using burrnd up, there is tiny metal chips and an oily scum on the top of my water, it has a horid smell. The only one that looked like it was alive was my 4 srtip damsel, i transwerd him into a bucket with a power head and had to leave for school, where i sit. i will do a huge water change when I get home, i hope my corals make it tell then.

uuughh...so sorry to hear that! I hate hearing these kind of stories!
I had a cousin who had a 55 gal reef set up in an apartment in manhattan. He came back from work one day and IT WAS ALL OVER THE FLOOR! The tank toppled over. He had a really nice set up too, with some beautiful coral and nice specimens-poor things!
What happened was the stand collapsed-it was kinda old and he really should have bought a new one, but ya never think this could happen.
Can you imagine coming home to this? Even worse, the water all leaked down into the apartment below him, so he had to pay for all of the damages-about 3k worth!
Bad day indeed. Just thought I'd share an even worse story to make ya feel somewhat better

I had a power head lock up while i was out of town for two days It built up so much heat that it raised the temp of my 180 to 91 deg. I lost about 5,000 dollars worth of coral:mad:

thx guys, the little guy i took out of the tank made it and the corals seem uneffected. Im amazed there ok after all the stuff that powerhead spit out and that smell. I'm worried about putting my other fish back in. I just did a 15% water change and the smell is gone... wait or just go ahead, i will be doing another big water change soon.

That sucks, I had a Rio burn up. Lucky I was home and saw it. The GFCI never tripped and I could of had a nice fire.

If the powerheads are taken out, what else do you use for current / water turnover in the tank then?:notsure:

I had my on-the-tank skimmer running all day, my other working powerhead was in the bucket with my remaining fish.
Good News!, all my levels are fine and no corals are lost and my last fish is doing fine back in the tank
