Might I suggest, if the tank is without fish, to leave it fishless for 6 weeks after you do your water changes. If ich is present in the system, it will die off. Additionally, the 6 weeks will allow you to figure out your equipment issues and give the system a chance to get more stable.

...A very good idea, and use a quarantine tank before adding any new critter.
