Well im back for a 2nd... no 3rd time. and with something good. i salvaged one of those betta starter kits from my basement put a 10 watt 50/50 pc (yes iknow overkill) over it, 1 cup of live sand and this really cool sponge/bio/chemical filter system i cooked up. anyway its looking good and all levels are good, cycle is done. So any idea what to put in it?
I was thinking of some sexy shrimp, shrooms, hermits what else?
Also the only thing i really wanted out of this is the sexy shrimp
So any suggestions?
Also i tested after the cycle by dropping a dead krill in there (a huge bio-load and my filter cleaned it up with no level changes! also i do 1 cup water changes every week.

Wow. That is a tiny tiny tank!
I'd think maybe a hermit... a snail... I can't get over how tiny that is.

i actually had a 1/2 gallon nano for like 3 months (after cycle) i had a pair of yellow clown gobies in there. I had only one 7w white 7200K bulb over it however. I kept 1 green shroom and one red shroom in the tank. It was really cool. The gobies ended up jumping out however (open top tank)
so i ended up putting a small scarlet cleaner shrimp in there instead for about another month. it was a really cool tank but a lot of maintenance.
ps: i ended up putting the shrimp in my main tank and puting the light and filter over my 10g nano.

sorry i cant post pics (i wish i could) i dont have a dig. camera.
maybe i can post drawings of my filter system i built outta extra part.
(sorry i cant stop useing this new thing)

get a lid, regardless if you get a fish or not. the lid limits evaporation (stabilizing the salinity) and lowers a lot of the upkeep of the pico-range tanks imo.
even if you have to custom cut it or even saran-wrap it (i've seen that too), it helps a lot.

so here is what i think ill do.

tiny pieces of live rock
Saran wrap (done it on other tanks)

probably 2~3 shrimp would be good. they're not very much bioload and it's not like they'll have a lot of places to hide. i'm assuming the betta kit is typical (1-pint to 1-quart capacity).
for that small of a tank (assuming it's that small) i'd tend to agree a fish is too much of a waste producer. there are ways but they usually aren't optimal for corals.
maybe an eviota goby or citron (they're catatonic mostof the time) but you'll probably have to be very vigilent on cleanups.
get us a sizing and that could get you more suggestions or criticisms.

IMO do not stuff any fish or sexy shrimp is such a small tank! Besides the bioload, a 1/2 gallon is waaayyy to small. Just because an animal is small, it's not always a reason to give it so little space. I have a sexy in my 36 gallon and it roams through the entire tank even though it always returns to its home anemone every night. I can't imagine cutting it's space by 72 times!
I believe a 1/2 gallon is 5x5x5".

You could do a dwarf seahorse or 2. They are very difficult to feed.... have to hatch your own baby brine. But it is cool for a small nano.

i think i have the same tank (empty).
i still say a couple of sexy or a couple of marine ghost shrimps are fine. i wouldn't try a fish in that tank though. (maybe a small citron, shhhh)
again, evaporation will be your issues imo. as long as you keep up with (the required amount of) maintenance, i wouldn't worry about overall water quality.
one thing that will develop even with regular maintenance is the surface film/tension. you can either attack that by hob or bubbling (cover would be mandatory then).

hahaha i didnt read that but its just funny that you want to put anything in a tank this small. Catalina gobys also live in low temperature waters just to let you know you should research fish.Dont even listen to nano becuase if a great white would fit in a 1/2 gallon hed do it.
