I'm not sure if its fish-safe or not, but J B Weld would easily withstand the pressure.

I didn't even try to fix the crack. Paul Muscarello of 3iQ Ventures was kind enough to send me a new housing. He even called me to walk me through the removal of the innards from the housing I broke and insertion into the new housing.

So, I reassembled the system (see plumbing re-design blog) and turned it on.
The SCWD's not only worked as advertised, but they are SO quiet that I can't hear them switching at all.
No knocking, no vibration.
I rescind my criticism of this product. They work wonderfully. The company that makes it stands behind the product. Turns out I just got two units from a batch with a manufacturing defect..
There was a fellow out there who posted a remark that his SCWD was "as loud as a kitchen blender." Paul Muscarello tracked that guy down and called him, but he never returned the call. If any of you know who posted that comment, tell the author to get in touch with 3iQ Ventures at www.3iqventures.com or even just call 310-535-7003. Mr. Muscarello wants to get that man a new unit and make him happy.
The 1" SCWD is a good product. I recommend it highly for wavemaking, especially if you do not want yet anot electrical plug forwhich you have to find yet another outlet.

dude, that set-up looks really cool, and it was also really nice of them to stand behind their product so readily. how big a tank do you have those hooked up to? i think we'll be looking into those once we set up our bigger tanks, cause from what ive seen an read on here, wave making is nice for larger tanks, am i wrong int his guys? mr x, any advice for me on this? should i look into getting one for a smaller tank? lol hey, what part of ga are youf rom anyway man? i was born an raised in waynesboro, right outside of augusta.

i liked the smaller scwd. these larger ones weren't available when i bought my oceans motions 4 way, or i might have went this way also.
wave making is nice for any reef tank. small or large.
glad to hear they worked out!

Wait! Stop! Hold the presses!
They're not switching.
Let me explain. When I got it up and running yesterday, I had no way of visually verifying which return discharge had water flowing and which one did not. So today, I did two things. First I just pulled out all 4 tubes leading from the U-hooks hanging on the back of the tank. Of course, this resulted in a ton of air being forced into the water, but it was an excellent means of seeing which tubes had water flowing and which did not. All 4 were flowing. Each SCWD was directing most of the water to, say, the left outlet but nonetheless each right outlet had a small amount of flow.
I let it run like that for a while to see if the SCWDs would switch. While that was running, I drilled a small hole just above the opening of each discharge tube and tied a 4" piece of fishing line. If water was flowing, the line would wiggle furiously. If not, it would be still. It's a simple means of visually verifying which tubes have water flowing and which don't. They were not switching.
Stopped, drained system, unscrewed the lids of ther SCWDs, removed the innards, and manually verified that the impeller was turning. It was. As the impeller turns, it rotates the gate. I manually verified that both gates were in fact rotating as the impeller turned. Re-installed the innards, put lids back on, primed system, and cranked it up. Of course, initially, there was air that needed to be purged from the system, but once all the air was purged, I was able to verify that the SCWDs are NOT switching. The only thing I can think of is that the gate is getting hung up on the hole. So, I called Mr. Musacarello and left a message on his voicemail. It's 9 AM Sunday morning in California right now, so I do not expect a return call for a while. I also just e-mailed him a copy of this post.
In the meantime, I put my ear up to each unit. They are both making a slight steady and rapid chatter like a millions BB's falling to the ground. I assume that is the impeller turning. One of them is also making a steady, but much slower click every few seconds.
PS - I am on St. Simons Island, Georgia, about a 4 hour drive from Augusta.
PPS- It's a 200 gallon tank with a 65 gallon sump.

Excuse me folks, but I am using this board to communicate with Mr. Musacarello. He was trying to describe something to me and a picture is worth 1000 words....

Mr. Muscarello says the problem is the failure of the white square tabs to be inserted into the black notches and he walked me through the process by which to get them to line up with and be inserted into the black notches. (Hold the black part into which the white part is inserted, called a carrier, with one hand and turn the black round part up above it, called a gate, clockwise until they line up. Then pull the gate up, exerting pressure against the carrier. When re-inserting the innards into the housing, be sure to push down on the carrier, not the gate. In other words, don't ever touch the white or blue parts.)

VOILA! Now they work as advertised.
My kudos and and a big Thank You of appreciation to Mr. Muscarello of 3iQ Ventures, LLC.

Their purpose is to create alternating currents, which is beneficial to all saltwater tanks, provided it's random. Not random = dead spots. Dead spots = cause of death. More random water flow = greater health to all.
So, the answer is yes.

Nine months later and they are still working silently. Can't say flawlessly though, because they stopped switching. When I inspected, I found some hard calcium deposits (I've had lots of calcium precipitating in my tank) had clogged the gate mechanism. In cleaning it, I broke the innards. Oops. My bad.
As with any product, I reckon it ought to be inspected and cleaned every now and then. A simple little wipe down with a cloth after removing the innards, and voila! Worked perfectly again.
Paul Muscarello of 3IQVentures was johnny-on-the-spot in sending me just the replacement part I needed.
They really do stand behind the product.

I've considered getting one of these devices for my tank, and was wondering how to clean it. Would it be safe to soak it in a big bowl of vinegar with the devices top top cover removed to dissolve calcium deposits?
Since I only have a single return right now (my tank is a 65), I would probably attach this directly to my return pump, running my exisiting return line to one side, and plumbing up a 2nd return via a hang-over-the-edge return, similar to whats used for canister filters. Think that'd work?
Didn't mean to threadjack, so apologies in advance.

very cool.. So how often do they switch? Is it still every 25-30 seconds? That doesn't seem like a wave to me
