i have a 100lbs live rocks and 60lbs live sand lay in a big container in my back yard for about 6 months with a powerhead in it. i just bought a fish tank and want to put them in there but all the live rocks are cover with green algae. should i do anything before put them in my tank. I'm thinking of scrub the live rocks with a nylon brush and stir the sand up and get the clean sand out.
please help.

I hope that you had them coverd and was checking the salinity of the water while it was outside if the rain was getting in and overflowing it you are going to have dead rock not live rock, or if the water was evaporration and you did not top it off with fresh water often you will also have dead rock. You needed to keep a consistant slainity, I hope you did. As you made it sound like you wre surprised to find the rock coverd in algea so it seems like you were not checking your rock while it was outside "cooking" in the sun.

I would be hesentant to put anything in a tank that has been sitting in my backyard unprotected for 6 months, the temp swings probably were huge on a daily basis, you probably have a lot of debrie that was blown in there and the rocks were coverd in algae. If you did not monitor the salinity of the water in the tub I would not use the rock or sand unless you recure the rock by seeding it with a few more good peices of rock and sand from your LFS. >>>>>And this time Cover it, keep it out of the sun and monitor the salinity of the water it should be 1.021- 1.025 at all times.<<<<<<

Ditto... I'd do 100% water change to make sure everything it good and cover them & get the containers out of the sun... essentially cycling the rock for 4-6 weeks. This should effectively eliminate the algae and cure the rock.

After it's been sitting in for a while, Check your water for Amonia, Nitrite and Nitrate...When they are all at 0, Check your PH, make sure it's at 8.2.
Then you can add live stock.

I would add some new live rock and sand to "seed" the stuff you had sitting outside with bacteria and critters to cycle it in your tank. If the salinity got to low while it was outside the benifiacl bacteria and critters in the rock and sand would of been killed. By adding the new rock you will add them and allow them to multiply and spread to the old rock while it cures.
