You dont really need to see a spike. I never saw spikes either when I was cycling my tank, I also never had nitrites. The tank looks good! Your getting more LR right? Get smaller pieces or break the bigger pieces into smaller ones so you have more surface for corals. The red spot isnt a sponge its most likely coraline algae, I had acouple of spots like that on my LR also.

thanks dude, i might get a couple more small rocks, i need to make some caves/hiding places.
i asked my LFS, to c if they can get me a Lettuce Nudibranch, and a flame scallop. since the nudibranch eats so much algae, i might just get one or 2 blue leg hermit-crabs, and that will be all for cleaning crew.

Dont get a flame, they are a waste of money. They usually dont last in a tank. I wanted one also, but was told not to waste my money. The cuc all depends on how much algae your tank's produced.
I have:
7 nassarius snails
7 astrea snails
7 cerith snails
3 turbo margareta snails (the best snails for cleanning rocks and glass IMO)
3 holloween hermits
3 tiny blue legg hermits
1 scarlet hermit
1 green emerald crab
And I still have algae growing! lol But they do a nice job. If you go with blue legg hermits make sure you put in extra shells of different sizes.

oh fudge... the guy at the LFS told me just to make sure, i sprinkle food over the flame scallop and it should be fine
??
algae wise, i don't have much... just a few strands of hairy algae growing on one side of the live rock, and that purple spots on the other one. so yeah i am going to start with very few clean up guys.
if i get blooms like you Kat, i will run to the store and get some more lol (yeah i saw your algae bloom pics, glad i don't have that issue.... YET!)

Yeah I was dosing purple up and it increased the phosphates which gave me algae blooms. My tank still has green algae all over the sand bed but its not to bad anymore. I think of it as food for the CUC.
I think it takes more effort then just sprinking food over the flame lol. I think they are picky eaters and you have to make sure they take the food. Thats one of the reasons they dont last in tanks at home. No one really knows their care requirments yet.
Also dont always believe your LFS! Most of them are out to make a buck! Mine wanted to sell me a star fish right after my tank cycled, and I told them that they need a mature tank and hes like oh yeah thats true lol.
P.S I didnt get all my cuc all at once, I waited to see how well of a job acouple snails and hermits were doing then added as I needed them.

yay fish is in the tank... finally, the flame dude is named George, i got some specialty food for coral/inverts, i hope he does okay, he looks so cool! the damsel is only staying for a week or so, i made a deal with my LFS to return him later. cool of them to do so!

PS, tested my water for calcium and all the other stuff, i might start putting in coral/sponges next week! YAY!

You might have just wasted your money lol.
Flame scallops will only last about 3 months at home in tanks also I think they need mature tanks. The damsel you wont be able to get it out of your tank later on.. They are quick little guys and very mean when they grow up. You should have bought a chromis for a starter its cheap still but a nicer fish.
Make sure you come here before you go and buy stuff at the LFS, they seems like they are out to make a buck.

the flame dude was only 6 bucks, and damsel was about 3... not that much of a waste :)
besides, i have the right food for him, and my water quality is really good so far.
but the LFS guy is really not that bad, there were lots of times where he guided me in the right direction, mostly on what kind of fish i can keep and which are the better coral for my small/young tank. They are all not that bad.
