I bought my wife a 12 aquapod can you take a picture of how your protein skimmer is in your nano. I got one and must be too stupid to get it in correctly.

that should be fine. just make sure your pump is adjusted how you want it in chamber 4 before you fill over it, otherwise it'll be annoying to pull out later if you need to.

mkzimms,
so does the 12g aquapod basically come with everything that i need? like is the filtration all good and everything?
can u explain what exactly this back chamber thing is and what it does? lol
thanks

yeah they come with everything, very plug-n-play. just replace the bio-balls with live rock rubble and your good to go.
at the back of the display part of the tank is a false wall and behind that are 4 chambers the overflow spills into. you can fill those chambers with whatever you want to provide filtration. the original setup comes with filter pad in chamber 1 (the overflow chamber), bio balls in chambers 2 and 3 and a pump in chamber 4. the bio balls aren't needed for reef setups, so most people just take them out and replace them with live rock rubble instead. my current setup is filter pad in chamber 1, live rock rubble in chambers 2 and 3 and pump and heater in chamber 4.
this is what the chambers look like if your looking at them from the back of the tank. as you can see this tank has had the black plastic removed so you can see whats back there.... people will do this so they can add a light pointing in there to grow cheato and make a mini fuge.
Note: this is not my setup, i just found a pic and made some notes on it...

when looking at the tank from the front chamber 1 would be on your left side, this is looking from the back so chamber 1 is on your right side. this picture also shows the layout of an added skimmer and the plastic sheet i was talking about to close off the lower overflow. that will cause all your water to move over the top overflow giving you better surface skimming.

Don't make yourself crazy! I have 24gaj jbj nano stock and love it, everything is doing great, no drilling no razor blading blah blah blah. Leave the building to the pro's. JMO. and also I would re-think that many turbo's unless they are really small, they tend to grow pretty large and knock over things. I speack from experiance, my turbo's caused a huge avalanch!! Just set it up, test you'r water do reg. water changes and enjoy it!!

of course you can just set it up and look at it... but the point is to take up additional interest in a project as well as add functionality to an already great reefing platform. none of those mods are "for the pros" and they do add measurable gains to what can be achieved by just throwing some rock in water and watching it grow.

its true turbos can get a little big... there should be a mixture of turbos and nassarius snails. not 20 turbos in case anyone misunderstood me.

I think I read elsewhere that the Aquapod 12 gal is actually 16 gal because of the chambers. Anyone able to confirm or deny this?

yeah thats true the chambers are 4 gallons.
i set my aquascape up today maybe ill start a diary
and quick question, if the clean up crew i am looking at has a cleaner shrimp in it, will it survive in a recently cycled tank?

as long as the tank has been cycled the shrimp should be ok. without much growing in there you may need to throw it some mysis shrimp every other day to keep it fed.

I have a Jbj !2 gl with mods that ive done .....dont put to much stuff in there because not much room...hopefully my pic can help.......Alivia

i wasn't able to get temperature under control until i moved the tank around my house and found the sweet spot. it used to run 78 at night and 83 during the day... too large of a swing. now its a constant 80.
unfortunately you may need to get a chiller...
i know some stores sell nano chillers for not to much, under $200.
other things you can try are letting a fan run across the waters surface but then you get lots of evaporation. try propping up the hood about 2 inches just to let in some circulation. install larger fans into the hood. during the summer i still occasionally have to freeze some ice packets and float them in the chambers.

i have a 9 gal nanowave and im trying to figure out how many snails and crabs to put in i was thinkin 10 turbos a couple nas and maby 10 hermits

10 hermits sounds like a lot for 9g... might not be enough food for them after a week or two. they also barrel through anything in their way, i'd say half that, or get the smallest ones you can. in a small volume tank you would want more nassarious than turbos, turbos make a big ditritus mess. the nassarious snails will keep your sand clean and leave their waste where its easily accessible to bacteria.

i was researching the aquapod, and i found that there was/is a recall on them. was yours affected by it? and if i buy one now, will it be "clean" or still affected by the recall?
thanks

no, i wasn't affected. i have a model #7051
there shouldn't be any of those left... it only affected 1,000 units and there were actually only 9 reported issues according to current usa. model #7050 issued in march '06, so just make sure you check on that. for the recall information you can go here...
https://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml06/06111.html
Name of Product: AquaPod 12-Gallon Aquariums
Units: About 1,000
Manufacturer and Distributor: Current USA Inc., of Vista, Calif.
Hazard: These aquariums have three power cords, two for the aquarium lamps and one for the air pump. When only one of the two lamp cords is plugged in, the unplugged lamp cord can become energized, posing an electrical shock hazard to consumers.

Only aquariums without a white label containing the manufacturer date and a bar code, which is attached to light reflector inside lid of the aquariums are included in this recall. To check if your unit has a white sticker, open the aquarium lid and look on the bottom left corner of the light reflector. If your AquaPod 12-Gallon System has a white label with a date in black letters and bar code, it is not included in the recall. Model numbers 7051 and 7052 aquariums also are not included in the recall.
Sold in: Pet stores nationwide, pet merchandise catalogs, and by Web retailers from December 2005 through January 2006 for about $240.
Manufactured in: China
Remedy: Consumers should stop using these aquariums immediately by turning off the power at the breaker switch and unplugging all the cords. Consumers should contact their local retailer or call the firm for information on receiving a free replacement aquarium.
Consumer Contact: For more information, consumers should call Current USA Inc. toll-free at (866) 276-8872 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. PT Monday through Friday, or visit the firm's Web site at www.current-usa.com
if by some strange alignment of the moon and stars you still end up receiving one of those just call current and have them replace it or don't purchase that one. i'm sure by now all the retailers are well aware of this one. no big deal...
good job with the research, we need more reefers who will actually make informed decisions and the world needs more consumers who make informed purchases.
