125 tanks long or tall?

I read that people can keep almost any fish in any 125g tank or bigger, but my question is: does it matter if it's longer or taller? I've seen 125g tanks that are 48x24x24 and others that are 72x18x23. Obviously the 72" will let the fish have more room to swim sideways, but besides that, what are your thoughts on this?

Personally, I believe longer is better than taller for two reasons.
First, the longer the tank the more lengh the fish will have to swim
back and forth, which is better than just up and down.
Two, the taller the tank the harder it is to keep clean.
You might need a ladder to reach the bottom of the tank to remove
algae or just place rock or corals.
The bigger the footprint you can get the better you and your salty friends
will be.
I would also go biggest you can afford and have room for, it is so much
easier to make a home for a large tang when you have a 240 or even
larger tank, I know I wish I did.
Just my two cents worth, hope it helps and good luck.

I was thinking about the whole cleaning the tank and how it may be difficult to reach all the way at the bottom. And I did like the idea on the fish having more space to swim back and forth. I was just hoping to save space with the taller, but I'd rather have happy healthy swimming fish and less space in my living room

long is the way to go.Taller will also require halogen lighting to support a healthly ref set up

go longer my first tank was long then when we moved the only spot that we found in the new house needed a taller tank so we got that one, later we found another place to put a tank and i really miss the long tank . Just more to do with it.
