15 Days In Qt Got Ich

I ordered three fish from this site. A Blue hippo, maroon clown and a niger trigger. 15 days into it I noticed the tang and the trigger have ich. Not real bad just a few spots. They al still eat like pigs though. I used some cupramine to kill it so we shall see. I wish i had a refractometer but its kinda late now. For some reason i have tried to do a copper test but the cupramine does not show up in it. Does ich get in the gills and cause the rapid breathing and death or is that the streess that does that?

Ich can get in the gills, but the rapid breathing leads me to think that you may have used too much copper, which may have spiked your ammonia. What copper test kit are you using?

i used the api test kit that registered absolutely nothing. I put more copper in today. I have done a significant water change and ran carbon for a few days. I removed the carbon and treated again today.

Tangs are VERY sensitive to copper. Is that the fish breathing heavily? When does your refractometer come? You could have Methelyne blue dipped them and not stressed out your fish.

i have not ordered one yet. None of the fish are breathing heavy now. A fox face died about 3 days ago, he was breathing heavy and died. I checked the parameters and they were all out of whack. I did a water change today with some new ro water.

OK, clearly the copper mixed with bad water quality are a problem here. Order the refractometer for $39.99 from here. It takes about 2-3 days for delivery (maybe more where you live). What are your exact readings for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, ph, kh, SG, and temp? What do you mean by "out of whack"? What were the readings?

i dont remember what they were now im at work. ammonia nitrites were both slightly high. much higher than i am comfortable with. i did a partial water change . i think i need to feed every other day to keep ammonia down. other than that i dont know what to do. y is the copper test not showing the copper i put in?

Methelyne blue is a product that is used in a bucket ONLY (it will destroy your biological filtration if put into the tank) that soothes the gills of a fish that has been in high ammonia, it calms fish down, and it also helps to knock the parasites off of a fish. It is only a bath, it does not in ANY way, replace treatment. It is similar to a fw dip, but without the stress. You use tank water in the bucket. It is the same water they came out of. It is a thereputic chemical often used by LFS's to reduce parasites on the fish before the fish go into their tanks.

How old is your copper kit? Copper soaks right into the silicone and substrate, ruining that tank for future invert purchases. I know it was a qt, but inverts/corals need to be qt'd as well. Not in that tank. You will have to set up another for that. Please test again when you get home and post the results.

this is the qt tank. i didnt know that you needed to qt inverts though. the copper test is brand new. Everyone preaches hypo. i have two fish in qt with ich and one that is ich free. Should i do the hypo on all of them?

Absolutely. Once ich is in a system, all fish have been exposed and are potential carriers of it. Some fish do not show signs at first because they have a stronger immune system and are able to fight some of the ich off. The weaker fish always get covered first. Just because a fish isn't showing ich, does not mean that it does not have a parasite or two. Inverts need to be qt'd because when ich drop off of fish, they land on the bottom of a tank/ocean. An invert or coral with a hard surface can have ich resting on it's surface. The ich reproduce in large quantities. One ich parasite can easily turn into hundreds or thousands if given the chance to host. By not having a host, the newborn ich will die.
