A friend of mine has a metal halide pendant fixture for sale. He says its for a 175w bulb. I was wondering if i put that over my 29 gallon tank, and add a coralife 18w T5 fixture with an actinic bulb if this would be enough to keep clams and sps corals.

keep ur sps close to the top of the tank, and put the clams lower. the fixture should be about 6-10 inches from the top of the water

That would be enough light on a 29. Just be sure to have a small fan blowing across the water to help with heat issues.
Careful which types of clams and SPS you put in there as some of them get large quickly and will outgrow a 29. Also, keep a close eye on your calcium levels as they will be depleted quickly with a smaller water volume.

Would building a wooden hood to mount this light in cause any problems? Could it get too hot and become a potential fire hazard?

grog, I see you had a wooden hood basicly set up the way i want to go. Did you make it, or was it something you picked up somewhere?

I made it.
Still have it and not using it so it is for sale. Had a few with interest in it, but nothing materialized. If interested, email me at thejediray@aol.com
