ok so i started this whole build tought a few weeks ago when i lost my last clown in my 55g. so i decided that i was going to build a small tank in the bedroom. i havnt figured out a for sure stock list yet but that will probly be one of my questions down the road. right now i would like to see it clear up a little.
so here is the start of my 10g(mine)
10g tank
50w heater
Marineland 100 filter15# bag of sand
1# bag of live sand
3# of live rock (so far funds are running low until friday)
Pics of 10g on nest post
i am taking all the stuff that i learnd from my 55g and turning it into a smaller better tank. i replace the CC
with real sand this time
. i am also starting with LR this time. as i started building this tank my GF decided to watch Finding nemo(while i was doing this, i could hear it from the garage) she decides that she would like a tank of her own. so i bought her her very own tank and did the same thing i did to mine except i used a different sand(much smaller grit). i built her a 20g so she can have her 2 clowns, firefish, & CUC.
here are some of the shots of her tank

ok so my next step is to get some more LR(10# in each maybe a little more in the 20g) but i have a question on lights for the small tanks:
for the 10g i would like to keep some zoa's maybe some shrooms & a leather. i havnt done to much reasearch on what i want yet just thinking out loud. probly just zoa's cuz they wont get to big. but in the 20g my GF has to have(no option she says) an anenomie. now for my question
what kind of lights should i be looking for, for both of my tanks?
i would like for them to be the same(except for size, 20'' & 24'') just to make things easyer.
thank you
i will post some more pics as i get more things for the tanks
in the mail right now i have:
2 Maxi-400's
2 glass tops

yea i know its tiny. but man it really moves the water. so i might upgrade later if its needed. i might get the one of my 55g if i go to the sump set-up.
another question:
ok so i bought some live sand and put it in my tanks. my LFS said i could stock them withing a few days because i used the live sand and LR. is this true. they say that it will not cycle cuz everything is fully Established. is this true?

yea i cant really complain for free filters though. i got them from my dad. they wernt ever used i guess. he doesnt remember where they came from or who bought they. so for now i will use the free-bee's until i really find what i am looking for. i would like to get emperer 280's if i could they seem to be nice + there is a huge spot for cheato.

They'll tell you anything to make a buck..
At least wait a week to let everything stabilize with daily testing.. if the rock is indeed showing ZERO die off and the sand was out of a longterm established tank and never exposed to air for more than a minute.. you might be ok..
My old biocube 14 was done like this... I basically transplanted rock and a sandbed out of a 2 year old tank and had coralline spreading over night. I still waited 2 weeks to stock it with daily testing. You have to be 100% sure about the history of the rock and sand though or else you're really rolling dice..
Best of luck.

on the 10gallon... MH all the way... like a 70w. On the 20gallon, T5HO. T5HO bulbs under 24inches in length lack the efficiency of a MH (and have VERY limited bulb choices) over the same tank. Don't get me wrong though, a 20inch T5 fixture over a 10gallon can still produce good results. You'll be able to accomplish whatever you want with either type of fixture. Buying used will save you some cash too, just make sure people don't try to pawn off broke junk on you.
