I'm getting close to adding my first fish along with my cleanup crew. What do people recommend for a 1st. I was thinking maybe a clownfish(nemo). How are these? The tank is a 46gal bowfront that I hope to have coral in down the road.

clowns are a great first fish. If you plan on a pair, get them at the same time.
Also firefish, gobies, and blennys are good for your size tank.

A damsel will work good for a few months until it beats everything up, and causes trouble trying to get it out of the tank.

WHY????
As long as tank has been properly cycled, clowns will be fine (They are a Damsel)

IMO the clown fish are the best starter fish: extremely hardy, attractive, swim around actively, and aren't overly aggressive.
Out of all the fish I had, only one fish (my clown fish) survived when I went on vacation and my tank got cooked by the hot California summer
. It even survived the aftermath of decay which it had to go through while I was away. Clown fish are definitely extremely hardy.
I have always wondered though, is it possible to keep two clown fish together if they aren't a mated pair and one is introduced later on?

What type of clown Percula or Ocellaris. One is hardier then the other.
I would avoid a damsel as they may complicate things later on (although they are very hardy).
Just make sure everything you add is coral friendly.

I think the tank is already cycled, he wants to add clean up crew which is typically added after a cycle. I wouldn't recommend cycling with a clown and don't think too many people would spend that money to cycle w/ that particular fish. That and I don't recommend anyone uses live fish to cycle.
So... which type of clown?
