1st Setup - Any Advise?

I have had a 55 gallon tank for over 2 years now and have yet to set it up. My wife bought it for me as incentive to finish my basement. Now I am ready and have already built the aquarium into the wall.
I have taken the advise of some (though I wished that I would have discovered this board first) and have ordered a Skilter 400. After that arrives (some time next week) I intend to go and get some crushed coral, salt, and some artificial rock decorations.
That's where I'm at, can anyone give me any further direction or get me straight before I go making some major errors.

First off what are your intentions going to be for the tank? Fish only? Reef?

I intend to go with a fish only tank. I have been discouraged from doing a reef and fish tank since this is my first aquarium. However, I am still open to suggestions.

Ty_05_f,
You give me too much credit for knowing what you in the world you are talking about. I am a wannabe techie and have not been educated in Aquarium Acronymology. I figure that FO means Fish Only. However, I can't find that other acronym in my Scrabble dictionary. What is an FOLSDIFJHOKE?

At the top of the board is a list of abbreviations we use it will help you a lot. Yes FO is fish only, LR is live rock. Most of us here will recommend a sand bed not crushed coral. For the best results a sand bed of 4-6" is the best. As far as live rock you will want 1-1.5 lbs per gallon. This is where I would start. Also getting one or two good books is very important, and just browsing here and asking questions will help you out.

Then live rock is LR. To look up the abriveations look at the very fist post titled Bulletin Board Acronyms. That will help.

FO (fish only) would be a good way to start out. Then when you get a lot of experiance under your belt go reef. I would add live rock. It will cycle your tank well. Also read, read, research and research. Here you will fine valuable info as well. Also this hobby take time and patience. HTH and good luck.

RevFred, I also built my 75 gallon into the basement walls. I put part in the living room and part in my office. I will attempt to put in a picture. This is when my tank was brand new.
