I have had FW for about 20 years and am setting up my 1st SW tank. It is a 55gal and im buying a wet/dry that is good for up to 125gal. My local fish store recommends i use a canister filter too, yet the guy selling me the wet/dry and others I speak to say the wet/dry is plenty. The plan is for basic fish, not reef, no live corals.

What is the brand name of the wet/dry filter just curious? No matter what it is you shouldnt need more filtrations, you should have a protein skimmer though. Save money and dont buy a canister filter, use it for things you will need, possibly a UV sterilizer? My first tank was a 55 gal with a sealife wet/dry filter with a built in protien skimmer, this filter did a great job and a lot of people I know who use them love them. I also had a UV unit, that was it, and had no problems. I have since moved up to a 130 gal and use the same UV unit...so its a good idea to buy more than you need, you can use it later when you get a larger system. Hope I help you and didnt jump around too much..Good Luck!
