2 maroons and an anemone

Hello.
I have had this 90gal tank set up for about 2 years and just recently started adding coral (im slow about thies things). I have had 2 maroon clowns for about 1 and 1/2 years in this tank. IM not sure if they are a mated pair . THey do get along and they hang out but not at all times. One is slightly larger than the outher and seams to be a little more agressive than the smaller (male type). ANyways I was thinking about geting an Anemone for them. Is this the makings of a desaster? If this is a good idea then what type of Anemone. I have had one in the past on a smaller tank with little luck but feal (after alot of learning and reserch) the time and situation may be good.

If they were a mated pair, you'd know about it. They would breed every 2-3 weeks.
Everything sound good in your tank. You could try a bubble-tip anemone or a long-tentacle anemone. The maroons may like the BTA better though, that is what they like at my LFS. You should get a fairly big anemone. It should be at least 2-3 times (diameter) of the lenght of the fish, a bit more with 2 fish.

I agree with Viper,
One on the BTA as your best chance of long term sucess,
Two that it should be of sufficiant size so that the maroons don't love it to death.
If sucessful then within several months you might even have the BTA split and give them both one of there own.
I'd bet a couple of maroons would love my anemone rock with 5 BTA's on it :D

I also have 2 maroon clowns and I added a long-tentacle anemone a week ago, no luck hosting yet....but waiting patiently. The maroons are getting ready to lay eggs (there first fry), don't know if this delays the hosting process. I will keep you posted on the progress. Good Luck

I'm not too sure, I am a newbee at this and the guy from the LFS did the entire setup for me. That is the main reason I come to these boards to learn more in order not to depend on someone if a problem arrives. I know it is fluorescent with upgraded bulbs. That I know for sure. He told me one anemone would be fine with this lighting and if I want to add corals I would have to upgrade further.

I don't think it is enough lighting for an anemone. Are the bulbs just one long tube with twe pins (for the electricity) on each side of the bulb, or are they two thin tubes put together with 4 pins on one side?

One of the bulbs is blue and the other white, both with 2 pins on each side. They are alot thicker than the regular fluorescent bulbs that came with the fixture.
Thanks

Check the bulbs themselves, they should have some writing on them, a T-12 bulb is like the thickness of a regular flouresent bulb. Yours might say that wattage as well, or they might be color coded at the ends, blue, gold, green. Look for the writing and let us know what it says.
Is there a large ballest to power those bulbs?

I found the bulb boxes, they are a power glow and a marine glow bulb. The fixture is the regular fixture that housed the fluorescent bulbs. The boxes only say that they are 40w, Is that enough? I see people post 440w. I get very nice alge growth on my LR, please let me know.
Thanks

Sorry Vic, normal output lights just are not enough to keep anemones alive.
I suggest you upgrade lighting if possible if you wish to even see the anemone live for long. From my experience the with the lighting that you have your anemone will grow smaller and smaller over time until it dies.
I would recommend a 380 or 440 watt VHO retrofit kit. These can be had online for less than 300 dollars with bulbs I believe.

Can you point me in the right direction please? Does SWF carry these lights? I was also thinking about getting moon lights. Do you think that is a good idea?
Thanks for all your help

We are unfortunalty restricted when posting links to other sites that advertise or are in direct competition to this site, but we can't catch everything.
I would suggest using the search button on lighting, you might find clues to what you are asking like in this thread for instance.

:) Now was that original or what
