Most people wouldn't suggest having a large dog in a small yard or even an apartment, but many people do and the dogs are just fine.
You and I should probably hide now, because this is a really hot topic.

Should I play both the tang AND the mandarine police? It is a tough job
Mandarines do need at least 100lbs of very maure rock unless you want to buy bottled pods. The reason is that they eat more pods than can reproduce in a tank with less rock. If you have a fuge for the pods to reproduce in then that is a huge plus. A yellow tang will be most comfortable in a 6 foot long tank. They go stir crazy in smaller tanks and will develop an illness. They don't like small quarters and get stressed out easily.

If your LFS are any good, they will warn you about the fish before selling it to you. Mine did. Pretty much yelled at me for trying to buy a mandarin and put it in my 46 gallon tank. So people will do what they want to do. All we can do is lay out the information and you act on it. Some people just need to chill out.
