Apparently...
I know that swf.com has rules about posting to competors sites but this one wasn't. I guess some mod just got carried away with the edit post button. Anyway the link I wanted to show is the first hit on google under kalkwasser... The site address is ...reefscapes...

Calcium will preciptiate if the there is not enough water to handle it all. When you mix kalk, even 1 teaspoon in a quart of water is not enough water and the calcium will precipitate, the vinager keeps this from happening and the mix can be added to your tank to mix in. If it has precipiated it will not mix in with your tank water. It would be like dropping undisolvable calcium crystals in your tank, they will just sink to the bottum but not affect your calcim levels.
You and mrdc, you should check your magnesium levels. If your magnesium is low (and it usually in in Instant Ocean) then that will also keep your calcium from being absorbed into the water... Rocks and "most" plants will not rapidly deplete your calcium levels, neither will soft corals. Coralline aglae will but not at all fast and many many stoney corals will noticably deplete it.

And Sly, you can cut and paste the info on that link if it's easier...

calcium should only be used when it test low. My tank was established for over a year with no corals and a LOT of coralline algae, but the water changes was enough to replenish the calcium levels.
It all gets confusing when a hobbiest tells you that a specific algae or coral NEED calcium. It's prolly true, they need calcium, but you get plenty of calcium in your salt mix. That also goes for iodine, potassium, iron, all those trace elements...

Thanks tiz, My mag level was the first thing I checked and it is right on (1320 mg/l). I have not had any precip that I have noticed and don't really see any in the mix/drip container (good/bad?). Also am I to understand that the addition of the vinegar, you do not have to let the mix sit for the sediment to settle?
My coraline is out of control and I do have several stonies (2 open brains, frog spawn, candy).
I think the kent product says max 2 teas per gal, is this to little? I think I'll try the same amount of kalk and add the vinegar and see what happens.
1.5 gals- 2 teas of vinegar-1.5 teas of kalk. Is this OK? I use tropic marin salt and I lose about a gal a day in evap. 70gal total water volume for the system. 50 gal tank.
Thanks this has been very helpful

You can replace your regular RO top offs by dripping kalk. It is the most convenient way to keep all your other params in check.

So you have to use kalk all the time? I have to replace about a gallon a day and was hoping not to have to drip Kalk every day.

It depends on what your system depletes. I tried kalk for a while and it was to much work for me. Just rying to fing the right amount to add daily was a task. At that point my hubby bought me an Aqua-Medic Reefdoser for Christmas. That would have worked great but I decided to go back to the two part b-ionic anyway... Much simpler for me. Costs more, but easier...

Thanks. I may just keep going with the b-ionic. I also plan to buy a better calcium tester when my current one is finished. Like I said, I am at 400 so it's not too low so I guess I can wait it out before trying something different.
