20 ppm too high for nitrates?

Not too high IMO but you can easily lower them with a series of water changes, reducing your feeding, lowering your bioload if you are overstocked (which may mean taking a fish or two back to LFS), using RO water that is nitrate free, feed quality frozen foods that are thawed and rinsed, and adding chaeto to your fuge if you have one.

for a fish only no its not to high for a reef tank they are getting a bit to high for the corals likeing.
a water change will lower them.

I have 1 fish which i just put in yesterday and he is not taking it very well. i dont know if it is becuase of the nitrates or not but my Gold Stripe Maroon tends to hide. I have 3 piece of coral which seem to be doing great. Did a small water change and it lowered a little. but i cannot get the fish to come out
