Hi I am planning on setting up a 200g+ reef tank and would appreciate if any one on this board who has a tank of this size or greater to give me DETAILED information about their tank. Such as Size, Dimensions, equipment, corals, fish, maintainace, and maybe a general price on how much they have spent. If this person could also post pics of their tank it would be aprreciated.

I have a 220... there are pics on this thread: https://www.saltwaterfish.com/vb/showthread.php?t=192035
Total cost without liverock and fish was about $2200 broken down as folloows: 900 for tank, stand, tops; 400 for refugium w/ 3000gph return; 200 for coralife super skimmer; 200 for 36 watt uv sterilizer; 300 for power compact lights; 200 for sand and misc. 2200gph pump for current.
The dimensions of my tank are 72" x 24" x 30". Inhabitants are epaullette shark, yellow stinray, snowflake eel, miniatus grouper, purple tang, sohal tang.
I also have a chocolate chip star, sandsifting star and large zebra turbo snail.
Also, many mushroom, button, star polyps and some zoos.
I think that's everything... let me know if you have questions.

Go to www.reefcentral.com there are many threads about building these big reef tanks and FOWLR from start to finish with pics. This site is great as well and I dont meen to take from it but the site I have linked you to has twenty times the info you are wanting.....Propper lighting for a 200+ reef would be way more than 300 watts. You will spend nearly $1,000 for the MH and actinic Flor, needed for a reef that size. You can also figure close to $1,000 for premium and mid grade live rock to do it propperly. You could save some money by useing base rock and then live rock on top of that. Here is a great site for the best base rock in the hobby www.reeferrocks.com

hello. this the first time leaving any kind of replies. i have had salt tanks for about 2 yrs and just the last 6 months decided to get more involved.
i am building a 180 gal reef tank. i decided to build my own stand and canopy.
The wood will be Phillipene Mahogany. It will also have doors on all side for easy access. I builts a s.s. frame to fit inside the stand to support the weight. what a project this has turned out to be. i changed my mind way to many times mid stream. atleast the tank stand will be a beautiful peice of furniture all in its own.
180 gal. acrylic tank $795
55 gal custom refugium and sump $ 300
3 250w MH and 2 165w VHO attinics $ 750
G-3 protein skimmer $275
1/4 horse pacific coast imports chiller $480
2 chamber calcium reactor and controller/mon. $500
100lbs live sand. already have 100lbs $75.
180# salawasi (indonesia?) live rock $3.40 per #
Mag drive 24 pump $120
PLC $260
Phosban reactor $30
Still need to buy the electical outlets and plumbing. I will be close to $5500 by the time i am done.

everything will depend...quality...looks etc
my 125 reef
tank/stand/can/filter/pump/lights
cost me right around $9,000
but again, i bought a clear for life show acrylic tank, ecosystem filter/hamilton 400watt mh retro fit and a pump that does 2000gph...and my stand/can are made 100% by hand and 100% mapple...
just look around and find whats good for you
i know people who've spent $400 on a used 125 and had it work just fine....looked like hell...but it worked.

The other information you need to know is how much will it cost you to keep it running!
We saved and got a very nice 250 set up, completely custom and hand made - not cheap.
What we didn't think about is how much the monthly electric bill would be with a system like this running.
The system includes the following equipment:
3 - Little Giant 4 pumps (running 24/7 of course)
4 - 250MH Lights (each lamp runs 6 hours a day - they overlap to simulate the sun)
8 - Canopy fans (runs 10 hours daily)
1 - 1/3HP Chiller (guessing about 10 hours daily)
My monthly electric bill increased by $175 (So California Edison - your rate will vary of course)
My additive bill (B-Ionic mainly) increase also.
Big tank means more livestock - monthly food bill will increase!
I would say this tank cost us about $200 a month to keep running.
Just some more info for you to prepare for!
Good Luck!

yup when i added my MH's and chiller my bill went up about $60 a month for electric
new tank is probably guna run me about 100-120 alone in electricity to keep it running im guna lower my MH time down to 6 hours though .... maybe go bare bottom that way i can run lights for a shorter period of time

At first I was running all my MHs for 10 hours.
First bulb on at 1100AM and 4th on at 1200 Noon, then 1st off at 8pm and 4th off at 9pm.
My first months electric bill was an added $250! :scared: :scared:
With some adjustments to the lighting schedule I got it down to an additional $160 and the livestock doesnt' seem to mind -- all looking good after 4 weeks of the change.
(I don't have any clams or SPS, just mainly softies and fish right now.)
1st bulb on at 11:30 then add 1 every hour.
4 bulb overlap for 4 hours then they start shutting down 1 every hour and all off at 8:30pm.
Also shut off the PCs completely.
What's the point of all this? You can keep your livestock happy and your electric bill in check by doing some tweeking!

I've had mine set up for 2 weeks and the first thing I did was look at the electricity consumption. I did a copuple of things.
1) Bought the most energy efficient equipment. Pumps (both pumps burn about 110w and the lights HQI 850w) seems a little hight but that is the best.
2) Made my house more efficient. Changed all light bulbs to energy efficient bulbs, dimmer switches. watch the heat/ac and go from there.
Now time to wait for that first electric bill.....

Hopes this helps...
Good luck.
