20g Long Frag Tank

I am planning on doing a 20g long frag tank with all sorts of corals in it and was wondering how i set it up? I have a saltwater tank already and didnt know if a frag tank would be different or not. i am also looking lights and was wondering how much wattage i should get. i would like to keep a clam or to plus a bunch!!! of corals in it. i was thinking about a 175w HQI lamp but didnt know if that would be to much wattage and might make the tank to hot. i would like all input please. oh and i was planning on setting it up where i have the tank, and then a 10g fuge right next to it as my filter.

well for such a shallow tank just suspend the mh a little further from the surface. way further from the surface. its going to be great for clams but not for softies. suspend it at a good height....
and yes the frag tank will be same as any other tank... get some live sand and few live rock rubble to put under egg crate..
assuming that you are using egg crate.
custom make a corner overflow... you have to drill tank though... once tank is drilled yous set.. get a wide piece of pvc... cut to a 90 degree with ridges at top and use as verflow..

A single 175w will do great. you will want to get a more sophisticated reflector (search lumenarc, lumenbright and lumenmax) to get full coverage. these reflectors allow you to raise them higher which will give you better coverage and heat reduction but still give you great intensity compared to typical batwing or lesser developed reflectors. Fan cooling should be sufficient for a single 175w halide over a 20g
You will be able to keep anything with a single 175w. Leathers, xenia, star polyps and zoanthid LOVE high light, more so than most LPS IMO. because they dont require it theres a misconception high light wouldn't be optimal for them. the REAL problem with leathers, xenia and star polyps under high light is they grow TOO FAST and too large too quickly. In a small tank like a 20g if you cant get rid of it fast enoug or allow it to grow beyond frag plugs they will begin to take up too much real estate or become nuisance. I think (well I know since I've used a high par 175w bulb) 175w are a good medium for not growing fast growing corals too quickly yet strong enough to keep the high light corals. If you want a frag tank with SPS dont do leather frags. if you dont want to do sps you can do whatever. Its a pretty small tank and leathers are known to intiate chemical warfare. In a frag tank you'd probably have several and there's not going to be alot of dilution (heavy carbon use may be effective against it).

Softies will thrive in the halide as well... they just don't require as much light as SPS.
I have a mixed reef with sps/softies/clams and they all do fine together.... and my frag tank is the same way --- just position your sps so they get more direct light than your softies.
Only thing that really seems to hate the intense light is my shrooms -- but they grow like mad anywhere there is shade.
