20K vs 10K

What is the growth rate difference between a 10K bulb and a 20K bulb? I have a 20K on my tank right now and my zoo's seem to be growing very slowly or not at all.

my expieriece is that 20k is more for looks and photos than anything else. Stuff grows much better at 10k, but not all of the colors pop.

What type of lighting do you use, MH, PC, T5, VHO, etc.?

Is that what you use on your tanks?
I have:
1 x 150w Phoenix 14K over my 15 gallon softie
1 x 150w Phoenix 14K over my 10 gallon frag
2 x 250w Phoenix 14K over my 75 gallon softie
2 x 250w SE Aquaconnect 15K over my 90 SPS
2 x 250w SE Aquaconnect 15K over my 120 mixed reef
1 x 175w SE Iwasaki 15K over my 40 frag tank
I'm kinda liking SE MH better. Much more choices and better spread of light.

Over larger tanks SE probably is better. I tryed SE over nanos and found they are too much spread. HQI fixtures like Icecap, PFO mini pendants are much better for nanos.
Goes to show the reflector is just as important for the type of tank it is lighting as much so as the type of bulb.
Thanks for the info on what you use. I assume the 150 over the frag is mounted high up? That's a lot of light. DO you have a thread with pics of all your tanks?

It mostly depends on the usable light created by the bulb. Google Sanjay's lighting page and look up the PAR of the bulbs you are considering. The more PAR the more energy the coral can obtain from the light generally speaking. Growth rate is not dependent on the color of the bulb.
Lighting is only one contributing factor in coral growth.

The 150 over the 10 is 10" off the water. Here's for you Mike.

10Ks are far more efficient than 20ks. I like the spectrum 20ks put out better than 10ks though. I will be curious to see if corals only appear to fluoresce more under 20k or if they morph under 20k to be more colorful under any light. For instance if you have two clones under 10k, put one under 20k for 3 months, then put it back under 10k, will it be more colorful than its clone.

i also agree with bangguy the color temp makes no difference.. i have grown them under every lighting imaginable less the led fixtures.... they all work .. i personally use 20k bulbs on my grow out tank and my dt.... The zoos grow great for me...i also think xm bulbs are the best just my 2 cents

Hopefully the mods will let this link stay....it is very useful in checking values of different ballasts and bulbs. I just started a 40 frag tank and went with the Iwasaki 175w bulb on an Icecap ballast. Gets way better PAR than most 250 MH bulbs with less power consumption. Nice color too.
edit: forgot the link....dooohh
