I just finished upgrading my 54 gal corner to a 265 gal , and i have decided to try and hatch a baby brown banded bamboo shark. The egg is currently alone in a 29gal biocube and will remain there for a few weeks after it hatches until im sure its feeding properly.
My question is what are good tank mates for this shark? Would this stock list work.
Dogface puffer
Hippo Tang
Lawn mower blenny
GSM Clown
Green Cromis
Snowflake eel
Naso Tang
and of course the bamboo shark
Maybe a Bluespot Stingrayn later in the future
I would also like suggestions on additional fish because im sure i can fit a few more in this tank.
Current setup
250lbs LS
150Lbs LR
AquaC Ev180 skimmer
2x 1190gph pumps for return
2x 1400gph overflow
45gal oceananic 250 trickle filter
12 gal wetdry filter with built in skimmer.
auto top off
500w titanium heater
4x MJ1200 power heads running on a wave machine for surface movement
2x 96wx2 pc
1x 64x2 pc
Temp 77deg
Salinity 1.025
Ph 8.2
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 0
i also have 2 175w 14k mh pendent and a 250w 10k pendent that i was thinking of adding but i doubt i will need it since there wont be many corals the dogface wont eat.
I have also been reading Aquarium Sharks & Rays by Scott W. Michael i have learned alot but its doesn't answer every question so thats why im hear.

First of all the puffer can't be with the catshark because they pick on sharks. Second the catshark will eventually grow out of the tank but it will be a while since it's not even hatched yet. Thirdly, if you want a shark in there for a lifetime then try a marbled catshark or coral catshark. Fourthly, instead of a blue spotted stingray how about a cali ray or cortez? They are small and have had a better sucess rate.

I would move some of the live rock to the middle of the tank and away from the sides. That way the shark can turn around on the sides of the tank.Maybe make two sections of rock or something instead of all the rock being straight across like that.

Yea no puffer with a shark, it will kill it. And the blue spotted ray usually dies in aquariums.

alright i will find a new home for the puffer.
i had already planed on making 2 stacks of rocks so there would be more swimming room for the shark.Just wasn't a big deal right now since the shark isnt even hatched .
ill look into other rays, its not a big priority on my list just more of a maybe in the future.
Whats other fish would be a good choice for this setup?

i would make sure the rock is tied down well, the shark will dig around it looking for food. You have lots of small rock.
you could do grouper, lion, butterflys, racoon, marron clown, or clarki, moray, goat fish, cardinalfishes, squirrelfishes, gobies hawkfish. that is a good list of most of the common fish that work with sharks. There are more but they get to big. Just make a list post it and we'll see if your tank size and set up work for it.

No angelfish with a shark, and I wouldn't put aggressive fish with a baby bamboo such as eels (tesselata especially). Email me@ charger21_sd@yahoo.com if you can so that I can give some places to find more info about sharks. Aquarium Sharks and Rays is also a good book.

Well it looks like this thread has been covered pretty much. So just to sum it up a bit. You will need to move the liverock eventually to ensure the Shark has the most swimming room possible available. As well ensure you give the shark some caves , cliffs to hide under and in. As for tankmates the Puffer needs to go, Angels will not work, Butterflies will not work, and lots of people recommend not to put Lions with sharks. So your new stock list has just been cut again. Tangs are great, Clowns are great, Porkfish are great, Chromis (may become snacks later on), Groupers, Eels, Hawkfish ect. Just stay away from Puffers, Angels, Butterflies, Triggers, and some what possible Lions.

sorry I should have said batfish, I was typing faster than I was thinking. Butterflys had niped at rays and such. I have no known shark issues but you want to be safe.

The stock list looks great compatibility wise. However I think its a bit over stocked. Panther Groupers get massive, so do Minatious. So you may need to upgrade or get rid of them in the future. For now, if you have great filteration I would say its fine. Becasue remember sharks need amazing water quality and no changes in water parameters.

I sent an email back so tell me if you don't get it because the internet was a little slow sending it so I'm not sure if it made it.

Still given the size of the tank - you will eventually need a much larger tank or pond.
Say something that in at least 200 gallons more than the 265.
