GTDA, thanks and i've read through your thread very nice tank plus pics of your fish have helped me make some of my decisions
I got a back porch to finish hopefully after next weekend, then the tank is going to be number one priority
Any reconmendations on lights? I'm leaning on t5s either
(2) ATI 48" 6x54
(2) Tek Elite 48" 6x54
Are the ATI's worth the high price? Im working towards minimal noise

A video would be awesome :) Whats all included in your softies cause i'd hate to get a great coral colony going just to have the angels chow down when they grew
I have a bunch of assorted Mushrooms that are doing great. My favorite are the 2 Giant Cup Mushrooms I have, the are about 7 inches accross each. I have Umbrella Leathers, and a nice Toadstool, I had some Colt Corals that I lost of my own fault (long story).

I have a mix of Power Compact and T5, if I had it to do over I certainly would have done all T5 lighting for sure. As to weather ATI are worth the extra money, don't know. I have retro fits from Sunlight Supply (not a household name) but they are quite nice with the Giesemann bulbs I use. The Tek's certainly look great on paper....er computer screen.
I hope you continue to update us on this set up...Pics too...It's going to be a great tank.

Im pretty torn between the two lights cause i definetely like the ATI lights much more but there is a decent price difference there but on the otherhand the price difference is minimal compared to the whole tank (but if i look at everything that way its gonna get really spendy all together) Guess I got some time to decide
Pics will probabley start rolling in about 1-2 weeks when i start to extend my closet an extra couple feet into the garage to make a nice little fish room and start installing my sump while i wait for the tank
KJR is there any pics floating around of your tank? Would assorted mushrooms happen to include any ricordea or yumas?

How would this fish list work
Queen, Emperor, Blueface angels
flame and coral beauty dwarf angels
pair of clowns
sohal tang- last fish
yellow belly hippo
blonde naso
blue spot or tiger jawfish
harlequin tusk
male leapord wrasse, after tanks real matured ?????
starry blenny
saddleback butterfly fish-dont know much about these guys so...
Im also still pondering doing black sand, i really like the way it accents the colors in the tank but am not sure if it absorbs to much light or shows to much waste????
Thanks
looks like the tank will start getting made in about 2 weeks

Every time I see a tank with a couple of Butterfly fish, I ask myself why the heck I don't have a few myself?!?
Saddleback would be an awesome choice, not as hardy as some (Threadfin and Racoon to name a few), but I think you can handle it, and it a beautiful choice.
I think the list is great.
I have liked the tanks I have seen with black sand, I was very close to doing it in my tank.

Thanks KJR, you told me just what i wanted to hear
I originally was pretty sure on the fact that i didnt care for a butterfly in the mix but the more i look at them the more i was feeling that they would bring a nice change to some additional color and shape in the tank.
The LFS around told me that black sands are made of silica and silica feeds algae, Is this true? If was figuring on using the tahitian moon black sand

Hey Kylev I had a Tusk in my acrylic tank and he destroyed it. Be careful. Those teeth are destructive. He kept fighting with his own reflection and destroyed my tank. I traded him away and fixed my tank. Took me 30 hours of sanding. Not fun.

List looks great man, what are you using for a QT-? I'm using a 55

HabsFan- thanks for the warning I will definetely take that into consideration because I love the tusk but would die if he destroyed my tank, not sure if its worth the risk cause who knows the personality of the fish i'd get
GTDA- I got a 55 gallon im gonna set up as well for a QT, Im going to elevate it above my sump inside the closet so it can be in a pretty stress free environment with no people traffic. My question is what is sufficient fitration? I got the tank from my brother with a canister pump from a fresh water setup, could this work or am i better or to buy something new? Im not looking to cut any corners.
Plus I have the money in place to pay the tank so I shall be rolling by the LFS to pay to have construction start today, and the fun begins :) I have a lot of work ahead of myself because i still need to tear out the back of my closet to extend it into the garage a couple feet to make the equipment room. I am also waiting for the tank to start my stand so that way I can ensure that everything will fit perfectly.

If you go away from the Harlequin (and I don't blame you, they could be a risk with acrylic), you might consider going away from the big non-reefsafe Wrasses all together, this will give you some flexibility with a small clean up crew. Wrasses are notorious cleanup crew destroyers, Angels may pick off some small hermits, but mine don't bother snails at all. Maybe then another Butterfly, or a medium sized Angel......Just a thought.

KJR- I like the way your thinking with that I am leaning towards another butterfly fish then, what would be my options that would get along with the saddleback? IMO the tusk is the only wrasse that is worth sacrificing the CUC, cause it would come in very handy to have some inverts cleaning up
I know i am going to have way to much money invested into this tank so i want to make a solid attempt at success and not having to re-stock failures

Here is a good article by Bob Fenner about "good" Butterfly Fish. There are a lot to choose from. Possibly the most common, but I do really like the Threadfin. I also really like Merten's, Black Backed and Lemon as well.
