I just finished a hob fuge for my 29 gallon. It's in the DIY section if you want to take a look. Just search for 'need help with hob refugium'.
I only have 2 fish in there: a domino damsel (who was supposed to be my sacrificial cycle fish, but nevere died) and a clarkii clown). They don't add much to the bioload. As far as corals: ricodeas, polyps, toadstools...those are doing great. I think alot of (mature) live rock is the key, though...it's like a big filter.
