2nd powerhead

I just bought my 2nd powerhead, I'm sick of the cyano on side of my tank. Anyways, I got side-tracked and COMPLETELY forgot to buy a sponge to cover the intake with. Is it safe to have it on w/out the sponge over the intake until I go back tomorrow and buy one or should I just wait until I buy a sponge?

Anyone? I don't want to turn the ph on unless I know it'll be safe w/out a sponge on it until tomorrow. But I also am incredibly sick of the cyano build up in the front corner of my tank!!

The only fish I've ever lost (hope I'm not jinxing myself) was due to a powerhead with an unscreened intake. I thought if I had the powerhead mounted sort of diagonally, so that the intake was up against the back glass, I'd be ok. The next morning I couldnt' find one of my 2 clowns until I turned off the power to the powerhead.

If it were me, I'd wait another day and do it right.

You said an unscreened ph. This ph has a screened intake, like filter intakes and skimmer intakes do. None of my fish could get sucked up into the ph.

if you don't have a small enough fish to fit into the screen, you should have no problem. i have had only a screen on 2 of my powerheads and havn't run into any problems.

OK thanks. Oh by the way if you didn't read the end of the post about that stone crab, he was a humu humu's lunch yesterday

oh that's good stuff!
the sponge on the powerhead is mainly there to prevent food and other misc. objects from getting sucked into the powerhead and possibly damaging the impeller inside.
