I'm going to pick up my 50 gal. Bow front tank in about an hour.
You'll be seeing me around a bit more now. I've been a lurker for some time.
Green hair algae ended my last venture in my sw hobby. I've learned a lot since that time.

ah...yea! pics are a huge must!! I also love looking at everyones pics :) as well as snapping those pics myself :)
I did buy my tank used, trying to save a buck(hahaha,,,, we all know with sw, "that aint gonna happen!" ) Im sure ill spend my weight in gold, err sw fish/supplies inside the next 6 months LOL i sure did the first goround with this hobby lol
anyway, those of you that did buy used, did you scrub the tank before using it? if so, did you use vinegar? (clear or apple cider vinegar) and is it ok if i wanted to scrub it with dawn dish soap first and then clean it with vinegar?
suggestions, opinions, helpful hints and/or tips are all welcome
my first time around I bought a new tank. this time its a used tank, and there was a ton of green hair algae in the tank, crushed coral for the substrate, and NO live rock at all, was fish only, with a piece of dead coral in it, covered in the green hair algae. a tomato clown, a damsel, and a zebra damsel (that one is in question, as im not at all sure what kind of fish it was) anyway... i emptied it completely out. I want to start it all new, therefor i need to clean the tank first.
any help here is greatly appreciated, thank you in advance :)

Ps. i will take a picture or two tomorrow, so you can see the tank itself in the "before" stage of its soon to be "LIFE" stage :)

DO NOT USE DISH SOAP
IT WILL KILL EVERYTHING
i've done that to a freshwater tank(thank god it was 37 cent goldfish)

also get a trible blenny
mine eats hair algae like crazy

i was in the same thing 1 years ago
i got a used 55 gal of criegslist
if the tank is glass use a bladed algae scruber
it will make short work of the H.A.
any Q. about used SW tanks give me a message

Just vinegar should work!
Also, I'm sure there are many who may disagree, but I use Dawn dish soap all the time to clean small tanks, brine shrimp hatchery, etc. Only original dawn and not antibiotic. Rinse well. They use it to clean critters in the ocean. Also, Bird keepers use it, as they claim it leaves no residue. I wouldn't use any other dish soap.
I also use it to clean my hands before tank maintainence!

after doing a bit of research, ive decided to use 1) hot water 2) clear vinegar and 3) a 3m pad to clean the tank.
ill be cleaning it tomorrow. I am also going to set up a tote, and run the hot water and vinegar through the bio wheel, and the clean the heater with it too.
there is so much salt leach on the light bulbs and the housing for the lights, i will have to carefully clean that too.
the stand had so much water damage to it, we had to toss it. Hubby will be building a new stand, so i will have to wait until he does that before I can start to fill up the tank
and put my sand and rock in (i haven't purchased any of it yet, i want to be sure im ready to use it)
Its going to feel like a long drawn out process but it will be worth it in the end.
I want everything to go right this time around :)
I have my test kits and food, and supplies from my first trip into this exciting hobby. once the stand is built, i will mix my salt water and go one step at a time, I can hardly wait to start
the cycling process!! I learned so much when i cycled the first time. NO LESS THAN 6 WEEKS for my cycle.
With my first tank, people who love me and care about me had the idea to shop for my first fishies to give to me as a surprise. They will be kindly asked not to do this, as it caused me to feel I had to add the fish to the tank WAAAAAY too early. before i do that this time, I will ask anyone who brings me fish tank items to return them until im ready. This time around I want to be the one to choose my livestock :) i appreciate what they tried to do for me, but would appreciate a gift cert much more ;)
wish it was tomorrow... I want to clean my tank!!
let me know what you think about the cleaning method ive chosen to go with
thank you guys for the replies :)
