I have aa 90 gallon tank. I lost a clown fish for about 4 months so 3 months ago I got a new one to complete the pair. today I found the clown fish in my sump. I put him back in the tank and everything seems alright. but I've always been under the impression you can't have 3 clowns together. what should I do?

Probably remove one. The two biggest will be female so one of those. If your a gambler add a 4th smaller then the sump clown and hope they establish territory opposite each other. Unlikely but possible

Hahaha the clownfish was hiding in the sump for 4 months?? Can't believe it survived.

Hey Jay, would it Be ok for them to leave the fish and only remove it if there is aggression? Or I would it be better to remove pre emptively?

In my option and it's only that lol. There will be aggression just a matter of time. Now that said I see alot of folks on here comment how aggressive clowns can be and take up large sections of the tank. Mine done bother a thing, they reside and lay eggs near the top next to the heater.

im a little late on the subject but ill thrown my two cents in...

my dad ordered 3 clowns all less then 1" in size...they all three were fine for about 2-3 months and then all of the sudden 2 of the bigger ones decided they were gonna fight to the death if not removed immediately...my dad then removed one of the two putting one in a QT tank...after a month he rearranged all of his rocks in his DT and tried adding the clown from QT back into his DT...in a matter of 30 seconds the 2 clowns were fiercely fighting again...so he then took the same clown out and put it back in QT which it will live its life there until he can rehome it with someone else in the future...oh his tank is 125 gallon tank and they still couldn't find a way to establish there own territory...

so IMO you will need a much much bigger system to house more then 2 clowns :)
