3 gallon eclipse

Sooo I have an empty 3 gallon eclipse lying around the house and i remembered my friends mom used a like 20 something gallon eclipse as a QT. Would i be able to set up a tiny little 3 gallon? I was thinking like 5 pounds of live rock and about a half inch sandbed. Its a pretty basic tank set up the lights suck so probably no coral im not really sure of the specifics but if anyone knows if i could have coral feel free to tell me what i was thinking maybe just some zoas or mushrooms, just something to add color. As for stock i was gunna go either just some inverts or a small CUC with a pistol shrip and goby.
what do you guys think? I'm also setting up my Red Sea Max but I need to talk to my parents because they will have to watch over it for 2-3 weeks at a time as i am in college so i wanted the little 3 gallon as a fun little hobby for my dorm

ohh nice, well i figure ill give it a shot, if it cycles properly and seems ok ill throw in some inverts and if they survive ill put in a goby. There is a lfs like 5 minutes from campus so if anything seems wrong i can just give them the goby back.
I looked up the tank you were tlaking about, i love how in the picture it shows 2 clown fish in a 3 gallon...*sigh* and people wonder why tanks get way over stocked

that would be sick, im trying to keep it as low cost as possible considering there will be weekends where i need to leave it with my roomate and times where i will probably have to try and drive it home an hour and a half so i need to be very very simple and cheap so i dont crash it like 4 times haha
how would you recommend i go about making a refugium

well the tank is shaped kinda like a trapazoid so the front is bigger than the back and the sides are straight but cause the back of the tank to be smaller
13" x 6.5" x 9.5" so you have 13 inches in the front to view the tank, it goes back 6.5 inches and then its 9.5 inches tall.
at the back however it shrinks from 13" to 10.5" and in the middle to get an idea of how much its tightening up its 12"
I've been looking at HOB filters that are pretty cheap since i only need one for like a 5 gallon and I've been looking at those lights so I'm thinking i might just spend the extra few dollars and buy a little glass 5 gallon and save the effort of making the eclipse work.
what do you think?

i guess thats better and you can use a HOB filter and customize it to a fuge. thats what i did with the tom tom filter. i took off everything it came with. put mud and chaeto with a small piece of lr rubble and its awsome

yeah thats what i was thinking of doing, most of those filters have a ton of extra room in the back. What did you use for a light on it?
edit: could you post some sort of diagram of what you did/pictures so i can get a good idea

well i use my normal aquarium light. the suckie 50/50 light. its amazing! lol i will just let me get home. i can draw it for you and i will post pics later. give me a few min to draw it

take your time theres no rush im just hanging out at home for the weekend from school. hopefully my lfs back at school has some chaeto or live rock at that. they didnt have much when i was there last time minus a few decent coral pieces

yeah that makes perfect sense, so you basically replaced the filter on the inside with mud lr rubble and chaeto. Do you notice that your tank gets cloudy at all from the small particles that are in the filter when you add the lr mud and chaeto or is it relatively clear?
do you have any filter pad or anything like that is basically what im asking

no actually my water is really clear. at first it gets cloudy but then it gets clear. but when you add the mud put a little of water on top. like that when the pump starts it doesnt destroy the mud. and you could have a filter pad. but i dont have one. you can do it your way. just move things around to see how you like it

that sounds good to me, i was just kinda worried some of the bad things wouldnt be removed from the tank if i didnt have a filter but if im doing weekly water changes i bet its fine, im just being paranoid because the tanks so small it seems easy to crash and burn
