3 purple tangs

i was at a friends house and he has a 125 with 3 purple tangs in it that are always swimming in a school...and he said he has not ever seen them fighting with each other.....has anyone ever had that many in their tank...i thought 1 was max....

1 is the rule, or at least thats what they say. maybe all at the same time? small enough to accect each other @ this time? who knows? fish are weird, what works for 1 may not for the other......JMO though.

Actually, while pairs are not typically recommended, a lot of people believe that groups of 3 or more will school. I have to admit that I broke the rule myself with 2 yellows and 1 purple.

yea his are med size about 3" long they are doing really good and he bought then all at the time from our lfs...but they were all inh different tanks there...it is really cool seeing 3 schooling togather...i thought about trying it but would rather do it with yellows for price reasons just incase it didnt work out

The yellows do school together. The purple does its own thing.
 
there is that one guy on the boards that has like 5 or 7 yellows in a single tank. he says that if you keep them in odd numbers they are ok i think?

I've heard this also but I think it's just an extension of the notion that they generally will fight in pairs. I don't think the fish can count whether there are 4 or 5 in the tank.

The tank is a 225. The tangs all would use aggression to establish dominance when the fish were first added. No major issues there and the aggression subsided once everyone got comfortable.

There's a guy on another forum with five yellows and four purples, added five originally but one got killed.
