30" Tank

Hi Y'all,
I have tank I'm setting up to be a reef tank. It's 30" wide, 23" tall and 12" front to back. It has a thin plastic strip running from front to back in the top center.
My question is: How important is this strip? It's definitely not taught or strong, very flimsy actually. I sure would like to get rid of the shadow it casts.
Just wondering, don't want to do something stupid.

not very taught now, but fill the tank with water, it will get pressure on it, DON'T cut it out. it keeps the glass from bowing out.

Actually it is full of water now. What I was thinking is trying to find something made out of clear plastic of glass to replace it.

you could drain the tank and remove it then get a piece of acrylic and some weld-on and try that ....but I'm not liable if the glass breaks..
