300 gallon lighting question

I am setting up a 300 gallon reef tank. I am building my own canopy, but I am not sure how high off of the surface the lights have to be? I have 3-250 watt 15k metal halides and 2-6ft actinic vho's. The tank is 36''wide and 6'long and 24'' deep. Any suggestions?

But IMO your lights should be around 8" to 12" off the water

Thanks for the advice devil dog, I think that I will just build at around 10 inches off of the surface.

IMHO I would mount them 12" the heat they put off, and the more distance as possible between top of tank the better....
